Just jumping in to give a thumbs up to the Hotel du Champs de Mars. Nice rooms, typical European size. Wonderfully charming, walking distance to the Tower, and 2 blocks from the Metro. DH and I walked to everywhere from there (including the Arc, Notre Dame and the Louvre), but we don't mind long walks. I would definitely recommend it.

You can eat in cafes rather than restaurants. Set meals are cheap. When out and about, I eat filled baguettes which are fresh and cheap.

I could do that also, if it were a goal for some reason and I had to, but the OP didn't really ask what is the cheapest possible to "do" Paris, but what a person typically spends based on their usual patterns. I am not sure what good that information is to someone, actually, without knowing whether your tastes and desires are the same or not as someone's budget. If iwannagonow really wanted to know what is the cheapest possible you can spend in Paris, that would be a different question, and I think most people would estimate around $75 a day perhaps without sleeping on the street.

Christina- about half way down this thread the OP changed the focus of the discussion by saying: "I have not found it very easy to find a hotel in Paris for $100 dollars"...

which, I agree, is very different than the question as originally asked.

We've also stayed at the Hotel de Champ du Mars -- and the only trick with them is booking it far enough in advance. He's a Rick Steves favorite, so they're often booked 6 months out.

Last time we tried to go there again, they were already full, so we stayed at the Grand Hotel Levesque, and loved that one too. Also under $100/night, and just around the corner on Rue Cler.

Thank you all for the posts. I realize my questions were very general as I indicated in my original post.

I am trying to get a general feel for the costs of a Paris trip from others perspectives, and, was testing the waters to see if a $100/day hotel was a reasonable idea. I gather it is possible, but I surmise I would be better satisfied by elevating to the $125-140 range. Thank you very much for the feedback. I will try and be more specific in future posts.

Oh, please don't take the comments as scolding you!

It's only that to your original question, I'm sure some people could honestly answer: $400/day for a hotel, $500/day meals for two, $100/day for sightseeing... because it takes all kinds. One person's "realistic costs" is another man's nightmare -lol!

I just got back from Paris. I was there for 9 days and for spending money I withdrew a total of 260.00 euros. Adding about 30% to that it's about 338.00.

That is JUST spending money. I did shop. I haven't got my bill yet but I'm not worried about it. I planned on doing it. I also am NOT a foodie. I paid cash for my meals, my metro tickets and small stuff..coffee here and there, a scarf and things at a street market etc. My museum tickets.

My plane fare and hotel came to about 1,650.00 so IF I hadn't elected to shop, the whole thing for me would have been just under 2,000.00.

If the food isn't the thing for you then there are a zillion and one places and ways to eat cheaply. If you're not a shopper, then that's more $ you won't spend. So, you have to kind of figure out what kind of experience you are looking for, take some advice from the other posters here and then make your best call.
