Realistic costs for 10 days

I know this is a question that has 1000 'depends' attached to it, but I thought I would ask anyways because I am very curious what other people spend on their travels to France and Paris in particular.

If you were going to Paris for one week, what would you estimate as your costs? If you were going to various regions, what would you estimate for say a 10 day trip? Do not include airfare as that is obviously dependent on where you live and many other factors.

I am assuming reasonable and normal travel accomodations and your typical activities. It is an open question I know but please share your thoughts. Thank you.

I usually budget CAD150.00 per night for a moderate 2-3 Star hotel or B&B....plus 150.00 Euros per day for meals and other costs excluding car rental or transportation of any kind. This is based on a couple and we eat in moderate restaurants.

If you are looking at staying only in Paris...everything costs more and you tend to visit more museums etc.

Fine dining and first class accommodation will push that up a considerable amount.

In Paris I would spend $125USD/day on a room and $75USD for the rest of my expenses including meals, local transportation, and admissions. I am traveling solo so the room cost will be higher than spliting the hotel with a companion. I am staying only in Paris because I don't want to go to various regions. So $200 x 10 days = $2000USD for me.

How long is a piece of string? The answer to your question is dependent on how much you want to spend, and your means.

I suggest that you figure what you would spend if you were in New York, or any large city where you live. You will certainly spend more than you would staying home. $150 per night for a hotel? $100 a day for food? $50 a day for entertainment and transport. Multiply that times 10, and you have a $3,000 baseline from which you can trim or add bucks.

We went to Italy and France for 19 days in October, and we spent way less than the figure above.

I have been to New York many times. I have been to Paris many times. Generally I spend about half as much per day in Paris as I do in New York. We stay in rather nice places and eat and drink well. On average we spend less than $300 for the two of us per day in Paris for everything. In New York, that is more often $600. Of course, theatre tickets in NYC make a big part of the difference, but even without, we spend a lot more in NYC than in Paris!

Paris is more affordable than New York City, particularly when it comes to hotels.

We spend $100/night for a double in the 7th, and about $100/day for food for the two of us (that's a $10 breakfast, $15 lunch and $25 dinner). With another $50 or so for entrance fees and a few extras (minus any serious shopping), We've spent about $250/day for two. So a week in Paris is usually about $1750-$2000.

We're not big shoppers or foodies though.

For a week (7 nights) in Paris for my beau and myself I would budget about $3700 ($2500 for hotels, $150 for transfers, $1500 for food, $500 for metro, cabs, cafe drinks and entrances).

I have not found it very easy to find a hotel in Paris for $100 dollars/day, thats not outside of walking distance to the main sites. I don't mind using the metro, but would prefer to walk.

If anyone could give me specific names of hotels in that price range that they have stayed in and found to be comfortable, or hotels that give discounts for longer stays I would appreciate it.

That's why I said $125USD (rather than $100) which gives you ~95 euro. Bumping it up that little bit gives many more choices imo.

www.hotelmonge.com was one recommended here that I sent a friend to this summer and it worked fine for her, it is in that price range.

Above $100 a day, but I was recently quoted Euro 93 or 98(?) for a double at the Hotel Jeanne d'Arc in the Marais. It gets great reviews and the location is, in my opinion, extremely central.

I really don't like to think about what my trips cost. It hurts my heart.

www.dacia-paris-hotel.com is another, a bit higher than what you want (~130 euro) but I have stayed there myself and liked it. both of these are in the 5th and walking distance to many many things.

Nytraveler, we plan also to visit (again) Paris, so i was interested in discussion. But something is wrong in your post: you said $3700, when 2500 + = 150 + 500 + 1500 + 500 = 5150. So, 3700 or 5150?
We found a hotel of 100 euro / night, and we think about 150 euro per day, plus some extra of 1000 euro for all the period.

Airfare (if I'm buying which is unlikely, I usually use miles + travel in the off-season) $2000 (2 adults + 2 kids), Apartment $2000, Food, transport, all the other stuff $1000. $5000 is about right, $3000 w/out airfare (also pretty consistent w/previous experiences).

For the extra 3 days I'd tack on another $1000 for housing & etc.

I spend about the same as Suze, maybe about $25 a day more. I think it is getting pretty difficult to find a double room in a nice hotel in a central area for US$100 or less, which is only around 80 euro. YOu can find something, but I don't have to limit my budget that much to worry about getting the cheapest hotel room. If you do need to watch it taht carefully, you can find something in that price range, though (eg Hotel de France Invalides).

Oh, I'm sorry, I made a mistake: I was quoted a double for Easter weekend 2007 at 84E. A steal, but my friend and I didn't want to bunk up all cuddly like that. ;)

Back to the original question about budget... my biggest variable is whether I am traveling solo or with someone (whether I have to pay for a hotel room myself or can share a room & split the cost).

Although when you're traveling with another person, you're (I'm) much more likely to order entire bottles of wine. And then some. That can add up. Hic.

I wish I could recall a couple of the other hotels I contacted earlier this month about Easter. I was definitely looking for budget hotels, and I got a few nice surprises. Search this website; you'll find threads about this.

Hmm, I haven't stayed here, but thought it looked like an interesting 2-star: hotel-chopin.com. It's the sister hotel of the Bretonnerie. I believe I read good comments on virtualtourist and/or tripadvisor. 77E for a "categorie 1" double. Check it out.
