rains in salzburg?
Our family of 3 with our 9 year old will be in Austria next week .You may call it an oversight on our part but we had not really thought of the possibility that it might rain heavily in Salzburg. We have only 3 days here in which to do the following:
1. Local sightseeing
2. A road trip to hallstatt (basically drive thru the salzkammergut ) and the grossglockner on 2 different days.
MY QUERY IS
Is it possible that we continue with our drives inspite of the rain?
Can we enjoy the Mirabell, the fortress, etc even during rain?
Some of the experts here please provide us with alternatives.!!
I am hoping we have at least one sunny day!!!
Many thanks in advance

I do not know for sure if it will rain heavily, but i want to be prepared for all eventualities.
The hotel where I have made a booking talked about continuous rains right now.
In any case, what are the alternatives I have - do u think day trips will be ok in the rain?
thanks

August 23rd is still too far away for reasonable weather forecasts. The current trend for that late in August sees partly cloudy to sunny days with no rain, and unseasonably cool temps (highs around 17-20C). Bring a sweater, esp. when you want to go up in the mountains.
Before setting sails for the Grossglocker Alpine Road, check the webcams (if possible). A sunny day is not necessarily a clear day in the mountains - it's usually a hazy day (at least after midday). It's much better than driving there on a rainy day (which is more or less useless), though.
On a rainy day, you can visit the salt mines in Berchtesgaden (don't need a car, take the bus), or the giant ice caves a bit south of Salzburg.

The latter is not a "drive-in" sight. Though you will drive to a parking lot and take a cable car, you will have to walk up/downhill a bit.
Another rainy day sight in Salzburg (their restaurant has quite a reputation, I think you need to make reservations if you want to eat there)

And another one (cheers!)

Salzburg also has lots of museums, and also sights like the fortress are mostly indoors exhibits anyway.
BTW.. the "Schnürlregen" is a well-known weather phenomenom in summer in Salzburg.. it's a soft constant rain that can last a while. You won't find any mentioning of this on the tourist info websites, though ;-)

many thanks for all the quick and wonderful tips, cowboy1968! noted the info!
I was looking forward to drive to the salzkammergut lake region and go as far as hallstatt without too many stops, only enjoying the scenery on the way. Hope at least this is possible.
I wasnt too keen on the museums cause we will be vienna for 3 days and do a few museums and palaces there. In Salzburg, we were very interested in mountain views and scenic drives. Fingers crossed!
BTW., can someone tell me if rains will disrupt my plans of going to HUngerburg and Seegrube in INNsbruck ?
Thank you all!

I don't get your question about rain and mountains near Innsbruck.
Mountains in the rain are the same everywhere, so the same advice applies to Innsbruck. If it's raining then it's also cloudy and that will disrupt your plans for going to Hungerburg and Seegrube in Innsbruck for the views.

Any time you go to europe - except for midsummer in southern Spain - syou should assuem that you will get some rain. (How often do you go at home for a week of 10 days or more without rain? Unless yuolive in a desert?)
Unless you are going hiking/camping why ever would a rain shower cause you to change plans? Don't you go out in the rain at home?
Just make sure your shoes are comfy and waterproof and youhave a sturdy flding umbrella - then smply ignore the rain (except for places where it's only the view that matters).

Pray to St Peter, he is in charge of the weather in these parts of the world. Sure there is a chance, but predictions are impossible a week in advance. All you can do is prepare for the worst and hope for the best. The weather is always a lottery. Good luck!

Are you asking me to predict the weather on the mountains near Innsbruck for next week?
Sorry, can't help there. Talk to St. Peter, or watch the daily weather forecast at a minimum.
If a view is important to you check the webcam. http://www.bergfex.com/innsbruck-nor.../webcams/c487/
I don't read German so I think it says something like darkness overnight with increasing light towards morning.

We were in Salzburg ten days ago. On one morning it was raining so we did a Rick Steves walking tour of Old Town. We were in and out of churches and stores so it was not a big problem. The only other day it rained we were near Bad Ischl and went to the Kaiservilla. It was wet walking to the villa but inside it was fine.

But is there a chance that the weather clears and then we do the trip?
