Quickest way from Florence to Milan - train or car?
We will be in Tuscany for a week (about 30 minutes south of Florence). Then we will be leaving for the states from Milan. We will be in Milan for only one evening.
We would like to get to Milan as early as possible, & see The Last Supper & as much of the old town area as we can before leaving early the next day. The problem we are having is: do we return the car in Florence when the car rental place opens, walk across to the train staion & take the train to Milan (we are staying in the city center)? Or do we leave Tuscany in our car & return it in Milan?
I believe returning the car in Florence would be easier & the train more relaxing, but on the other hand we can leave earlier if we drive to Milan & hope returning the car won't be a problem. My wife & I are going back & forth on this. Any ideas or opinions would be welcome. Thanks.

there are several trains per hour and it takes about 2h 45 min to get from Florence to Milan. Check out the schedule on www.trenitalia.com

Take the train.
There's a fast Eurostar that leaves Florence at 7:08 a.m. and arrives in Milan at 10:00 a.m. You couldn't beat that time driving, and you have practically the whole day in Milan without having to deal with returning the car, etc., etc.

I would also train into Milan, get a hotel close to the train station, use the metro to get into the city and the next morning get the bus shuttle at the train station to the airport. We used a hotel that was close enough for us to walk from and to the train station.

If your already paying for a car rental for a week in Tuscany it would be cheaper to just drive the car to Milan and drop it off in Milan. You can drop the car off in Milan at a city office or take it to the airport. If you take it to the airport, you park the car at the rental carpark and drop the keys off in the drop box inside the airport for whichever car rental place you have if it's early in the morning.
