Hi Iwannatravelnow,
That seems to be the general peak price ,check out the off peak and weekend prices they are usually cheaper, but as Trevor said the National express is a lot cheaper, in fact it is quite common to get a return ticket for about £11 on line if you are early enough.
This is a great old thread and I wonder how Kascha912 got on.
Kascha912 are you there?

Wow,
my old thread came up again!
Yes, the least expensive way to travel between London and Cardiff seems to be the bus. My husband and I took it when we were travelling in June. No complaints.
Dear Muck,
even if it's this late let me please thank you for the tip with the canon salute on the castle grounds: This was an interesting experience! (And loud ;-)) I also did the guided tour of the castle.
Went to the National Museum of Wales: very interesting and wonderful works of art. I actually had a lot of fun following a group of elementary school kids around and listen to their teacher explain paintings to them.
And of course, I did some (window)shopping, had multiple coffee stops, went to the Bay for dinner and generally enjoyed the stay in Cardiff.
I probably could have fit in more activities and sights but after the first very busy days in London it felt great to relax some and do it more unhuriedly.

I LOVE Cardiff! I've been several times to visit a friend, and usually take the National Coach down from London. Pretty simple and cheaper than the train.
Last time I was there, about two years ago, we went to the Wales/Tonga Rugby Match at Millenium Stadium, went to see Tinturn Abbey, visited the White Castle and some other stuff. I was sick much of the time, but managed to get out and about anyway.
On another trip we went to St. Fagans, over to Penarth and walked around the old part of downtown. We also drank our Brains! Yummy!
I am planning to come over again in November (over the US Thanksgiving holiday) and am following this thread closely!
Thanks!

Fairfax -If you are planning to stay in a hotel in Cardiff for Thanksgiving can I suggest you start looking now?We tried about two weeks ago to book for the weekend of the 14-16th November and although this is before Thanksgiving places are full- and I don't know why. The rugby won't have started so there may be some major conference on.We have finally found a room in the Ibis.
Mucky-made it to Insole Court two weeks ago. What a shame that it is being ignored and left to rot.I thought that perhaps it should be bought and run as a Fodor's co-operative. I doubt there is anywhere else in Cardiff in such a nice location. You could hardly believe that Western Avenue was so close.
Thank you for putting me in the direction of it.

Hi fairfax,
Which is the white castle?
Did you mean Castle Coch (Red Castle)?
Glad you enjoyed it here.
Interesting that you went to Penarth.
Also interesting that you like Brains beer, did you try SA (in welsh folklore it is known as 'skull attack')
Strangely enough I too was at the Tonga match, anyone who has the opportunity to go to the 'Mill' should do so especially with a 'full house'.
Enjoy your stay in November, how long will you stay?

Frances & Mucky - I am staying with a friend in Cardiff. He lives along Corporation Road near the river and has a couple of houses there. He used to live in Penarth, and showed me around there. We walked along the cliff there. It was really lovely.
I can't remember what the name of the white castle was. It was on the way back from Tinturn, maybe near Abergveney(?). It was near dark when we got there, and when we walked over the moat bridge into the inner ring of the castle, I had the strangest frission of history passing through me. Of course, I was suffering badly from food poisoning from oysters, so it may have been that! ;-)
My friend makes me do all of the local things while I am there, which is good. He knows all of the funky places to poke around. When I come in November, I think I will be in Cardiff for a couple of days. I also need to be in Norwich and Lincoln, so I have to divide up the 10 days into small parcels.

Hi Frances,
I have not checked for sure but I think the Network Q car Rally is in Cardiff between those dates and also the New Ikea store will also open, actually not far from Fairfax's friend.
So that may explain it.
I am so pleased you got to Insole Court.
It's such a beautiful place to take photographs with so many 'props'.
The house is a disgrace, as you said it should not be left to rot...but it is !!
Can you imagine a horror movie in the darkness with the vampire entering via the large doorway at the front !!!...lol
Fairfax-Sorry I thought you mean't the white castle was in Cardiff. not sure which one it was I will enquire.
You have a good friend, in the area of riverside and Penarth is really traditional old Cardiff where the 'locals' live.
If the oysters hadn't got you then the SA would have !!

Oooohhh!! The new Ikea! One just opened sort of near us in maryland and the place was mobbed for ages! The one close to where i live has been around for about 15 years. Great place.
I will have to ask my friend what the Castle was. I loved Tinturn Abbey. Got loads of moody, evocative photos there. We has also stopped by a horse race on the way to Tinturn and watched the jumpers (horses) from the side of the road. I felt like i was in a Dick Francis book!
I've been poking around with coming to Cardiff to live for a year or so, but don't know what the job situation is there.

White Castle is about 5 miles east of Abergavenny, just off the B highway running between Ross-on-Wye and Abergavenny. It is one of the three famous (at least I thought so) castles in the area built by Hubert de Burgh in the 13th century. The other two being Skenfrith and Grosmount. There is a waymarked walk amongst the three.

The job situation in Cardiff is very good at the moment. There seems to be plenty of jobs going, and lots of new companies opening up. You wouldn't have many problems with that. The Number (an american firm) have just opened up their British call centre from here, and it seems to be constantly employing new people all the time.

Sorry Ron, I am probably a bit dull when it comes to castles.
I have not heard of Skenfrith and Grosmount either !
I will investigate this too...lol sounds like I ought to visit them, unless some tourists wish to tell me all about them !
Yes it really is a major catastrophe here in Cardiff as Ikea decided to open the same day as the Rally....Not sure who will drive fastest, rally drivers or the shoppers ...;-)
