Question: Florence Car Rental

During my May '08 Italy vacation, I plan to rent a car in Florence and drive south through the Tuscan countryside, eventually returning the car to the same location in Florence. I've tried a dozen variations of my itinerary, and I always end up needing to return my car on a Sunday afternoon. Because of this, is the Florence airport my only choice for rental locations?

that's hard to answer: Where will you be coming from with the car, and where are you going after you turn it in?

Hello lamogood,

charnees asks good questions and I add:
1. What rental company are you trying to book from?

2. Is it so bad to return to the airport if it's the only one open? It is MUCH easier to get back to the airport than some other sites in Florence.

If you click on my username, you can see the advise I got on this same subject (I believe it is posting #60).

I took the www.autoeurope advise, as well as the Borgo Ognassanti location. It worked really well for us.

Have fun!

Thanks for the info. My itinerary returns me to Florence by way of the Autostradale from Siena. No specific car company as of yet - I was going to choose based on location: I want to avoid driving within the city, and after drop-off, I need an easy transfer to the train station.

There are buses and taxis that will take you to the train station. The buses end up about block away from the station.

The Borgo Ognassanti location should fit you pretty well. It is towards the edge of the city, yet only about a 10 minute walk from the train station. We were worried about driving in the city as well, but did just fine with this location.

If walking is an issue, you may be able to find a better drop off.

Thanks again for your help. The Borgo Ognissanti branch of AutoEurope is close to the train station and appears to be within easy reach of the main roads south. Their website says that this location is "open all day" on the Sunday I want to drop-off, while every other location specifically states either Open or Closed on Sundays. Does anyone know if the Borgo Ognissanti branch is some kind of main center, open all the time; or would I be wise to ask them for clarification?

There is also an Avis at the Borgo Ognassanti location, if that helps. Let me know how you pan out, as we are playing with the same idea in renting a car for the day. Though with someone more familiar with us, like Avis.
