Can a few of you Paris vets gimme the skinny on which Arr. is best situated for a first time visit to The City of Lights.!?

Merci.

FYI: quel arrondisement
City of Light

try wading through above threads; general consensus is that inner ones numbered 1, and 4-8 are best for most first-timers if you have to summarize.

..I think from your note that this is your first trip..so dont worry, it will, I hope, be one of many. Would suggest the 6th near the 7th of Ile St. Louis for a first time trip. You are leaving on the 17th so some of the more popular small places may be full. See what is available- try a web site which has something about charme in it- list a number of the small hotels in Paris. Also try ratestogo at this date for some good deals. Please cross check any of your choices on trip advisor. There isn't one best arr rather there is the one that best meets your needs!

We stayed a week in a wonderful little apartment in a building next to Place des Vosges, just at the corner of the Place. It had a small balcony looking directly into the Place. This is one of the loveliest and most harmonious squares (and one of the oldest public squaes in Europe) you will ever find. It's very close to the Bastille metro stop, plenty of restaurants (bakery next door!) and sevices nearby (we cooked, too), and the neighborhood was pretty quiet. It is next to the lively Marais if you want some neat shops and the Rue des Rosiers, the old Jewish Quarter. The Italian woman who owns tha apt has several in different areas of town. Here is a link to her website and the apt we rented was "one bedroom apt at Place des Vosges". And the prices were VERY reasonable. She also has a studio in the same building ( but no balcony) and another place down the block (rue de Jarente), as well as other flats around town. I have spent a lot of time in Paris and this Bastille/Marais area is delightful and convenient.

She also runs great last minute specials on the places that aren't booked up.

Nmlhats, I love Place des Vosges area. Did you eat at the Pope and the Mule restaurant, so yummy!

The apartment looks great, but I'm a bit of a shower freak, can you tell me if your apartment had a satisfactory shower? Also, how many stairs upstairs (I assume there's no elevator?)? annieladd
