Overwhelmed by Paris Hotels and search function is not helping at all today!!!!

Please, please help! I cannot get the search function to help today (not that it is very helpful at its best )and I really need to get my plans rolling.

I need a hotel in Paris at a target rate of $100. I am half broke from my last vacation but I refuse to let go the opportunity to go to Paris and stay after a business trip.

Requirements are: that it is not awfully located and in a 'safe' neighborhood since I could be going by myself, that it is clean and that it has the bathroom in the room.

The Hotel du College de France, in the 5th, meets all your requirements and should fit within your budget:

Here's my tip... I pick an arrondisement and only look at hotels there. For instance if I decide I'd want to be in the 5th or 6th for a centrally location, or the 7th for a more residential feel, then it really cuts down the number of options so you're not trying to research every dang hotel in all of greater Paris!

I second the recommendation to decide on the arrondissement first and then find a hotel. I like the 2** Hotel College de France in the 5th also. I received notice recently from www.parishotels.com for some great prices on hotels now and in the future. I was able to book two rooms in a 5th arr. 3*** hotel next August (2006) 88 euros for a double room including breakfast. You might be able to find something suitable for yourself. Check for comments from trip advisor for the hotels you are considering. Happy hunting. Deborah

I just returned from Paris, and stayed in the Hotel Splendid in the 7th. It is close to Les Invalides (Napolean's Tomb) and the Champs du Mars/Eiffel Tower. The area was very safe, and the hotel was clean - just restored 4 years ago, I believe. Very reasonably priced, also! Have Fun!

I have just reserved at Hotel du Lys. It was a bit more than I was hoping to pay but I had a real hard time finding hotel availability!!! I also wanted to stay in a safe area since DH could not get his FF ticket and will not be going.

This will be my first truly solo experience !!! By this I mean real solo - not business by day and solo in the evening. Four days in Paris by myself!!!! As much time as I want in the Louvre without having to hurry up because someone is bored

I have been in many times in the US by myself as well as in Madrid (this hardly counts as it was only a day and a half and I speak the language)

So I will now proudly join the Fodorite Legion of Female Solo Travellers. Give me a year or two to get the gist and you might find me in Camboya (DH does not want to go there).

Welcome to the ranks marigross!! I was terribly concerned about my first real solo trip to Europe this year in May/June. However I enjoyed it more than I have ever enjoyed a trip before.

I am very much closer to 60 than 50 (something I rarely admit) and change doesnt always sit comfortably with me.
I am now in the process of reducing my mortgage so I can spend some time each year travelling!!!!

This time last year I would never have imagined I would be saying such a thing!!!!

The danger for you will be that you may never enjoy a trip with DH again.

I look forward to hearing about it when you return.

Bon Voyage

I do not agree that choosing an <i>arrondissement</i> is the way to start (if value is your goal). The further you get from Notre Dame, the further your money will go. Paris is so compact, and public transport so efficient, that you can get to the heart of the city in a few minutes from quite a distance out. From Antony, for example, you can be at Notre Dame in as little as 17 minutes.

Refer to the zones on the <i>RER IdF</i> map at <b>http://www.ratp.info/orienter/tous_plans_pdf.php
</b> and look for accommodations near an RER station in Zones 2-3. Being situated on the &quot;B&quot; line is a bonus, because you can get to and from CDG without changing trains.

We recently returned from staying at Hotel Lord Byron. It is a couple of minutes walk from the Champs Elysee and the Arc de Triumph. Each room has its own shower, etc., and it has AC. We paid 110 Euros in August, so I expect it will be a little cheaper by the time you go. While the rooms are small this hotel is terrific value and there is even a garden that you can use for a picnic lunch if you wish.

I'm far from an expert on hotels in Paris but following a search with similar criteria stayed at the Hotel Langlois near Gare St. Lazare. It was highly rated and we found it to be a good hotel,in a safe area &amp; very close to the Metro. I believe their single rates are between 80-90 Euro.

A hundred dollars isn't much for a Paris hotel. Three that i would recommend are the Jeanne d'Arc (they are the cheapest but not one of my favorites), The Relais de Louvre and the Castex.

The Relais de Louvre is right across the street from the Louvre and in a quiet location. Its a charming small hotel.

The Castex is a simple and clean hotel near the Bastille and Marais.

The Jeanne d'Arc is in an excellent location but is a bit of a mix and match place. I really didn't think it was too clean, but it is VERY popular.

Here is my review of the Jeanne d'Arc

Hope you find something good!

$100 is a LOT if you don't need to roll out of your bed onto the Boul Mich.

For example, you could get the four-star Comfort Inn in Rosny-sous-Bois for 54&euro; (about 20% less than your $100 target). It's huge by Parisian standards, brand new, and minutes from Gare du Nord via RER E.

Richardab, maybe I'm mistaken but didn't you dislike the Hotel Jeanne d' Arc?

I understand as I am too. I read that the Jeanne d' Arc staff has attitude problems at Trip Advisor. Did you notice this when you stayed there? To me that can ruin one's stay. Thanks.

On the threads sandi pulled up you will find several recommendations for Hotel Monge on rue Monge in the 5th. I paid 97 euros a night for a double/twin in early July, and it is a really nice little hotel in a good safe location.

Have a great trip.

I do think that picking an area you are willing to stay in is very important in picking hotels and in determining &quot;value&quot;. Part of value is the location, a big part. The reason for deciding on neighborhood first, as others said, is you have to narrow down the listings and places to consider or you can just spend way too long considering hundreds of hotels all over the place.

Now $100 isn't very much nowadays, but it can be done. I think the Monge is a good idea, or several in the 7th (how about Hotel de France Invalides, St Cirq thinks it's fine so I'm sure it is at that price point) -- the College de France is a good location and cute hotel, if it's in your budget. I thought it was over that amount by now, though. I thought the Castex was way over that, also, but I might be wrong.
