Public transportation to Newsch--Neuschwan--(insert bad speller emoticon here)
I'm due to be staying in Pfarrwerfen (woohoooo) near Salzburg and was wondering if any of you could give advice on getting to Neuschwanstein castle from the Salzburg area via train/bus etc.
I think I may have seen this addressed before, and did try a few searches. My guide books don't address the international issues, and tours from out of Salzburg are looking to be about $250 or so, which is a bit rich for my taste.
Of course, I'll also be happy to hear any further advice on Austria in July!

I would not do a tour from Salzburg to Neuschwanstein. Too far and too much to see in the Salzburg area. I have been to Neuschwanstein 3 times and do enjoy this area, but you should concentrate on the area you are in and do the castle on another trip.....especially if the cost is $250.00.

A German friend of mine got a great chuckle when I tried to pronounce, let pronounce, the N word. : - )
Unfortunately Salzburg is not well positioned relative to Neuschwanstein. It isn't really feasible to do as a day-trip by public transportation - it will take you almost 4 hours by train, one way, by via either Munich or Innsbruck. So an overnight in the area would be most practical if you are using public transit out of Salzburg.
As an alternative, there is another King Ludvig castle much closer to Salzburg - Herrenchiemsee, which I haven't visited but someone here is sure to have.
OOops, too slow at posting - I see others have beaten me to it with this idea. Good luck!

Thanks for the info, everybody!
I forgot to mention that I'll be in this area for two weeks, so I'll certainly be seeing the Salzburg sites and sights. It's just that this is the closest to the N-palace that I'm projected to be for quite a few years (although that's always subject to change, eh?) and thought it might be doable. Sounds like the car is really the best option, though.
Thanks again, and any more options and advice are always welcome!
