Public Transport - Glasgow to Edinburgh

We are thinking of visiting Scotland in late May. We like the idea of 9 days in Edinburgh as there appears to be plenty to see by either walking or using the bus, much as we did in London and Munich last year. Would also consider a couple of day trips on a tour bus. We prefer American Airlines, but all their direct flights from the U.S. only fly into Glasgow. Is there public transport (bus or train) from Glasgow to Edinburgh?

Citylink buses every 20 minutes from Buchanan Street Station to St Andrew Square, Scotrail trains every half hour from Queen Street station to Waverley station.

Since you are arriving at Glasgow airport, there really isn't any reason to go into the city center to catch a train over to Edinburgh. There is frequent direct coach service right from the terminal to central Edinburgh.

Of course, if you wanted to spend a day or two in Glasgow - then the train from Glasgow to Edinburgh makes sense.

Janis,
You must know something I don't as I use the airport bus link regularly and I'm not aware of any direct service to Edinburgh - the airport web site doesn't mention one either. I'm sure you have to catch a connecting service from Buchanan Street.
One other minor correction re. Ron's message - the trains run every 15 minutes to Edinburgh from Queen Street up to 7p.m. then it become a half-hour service

Thanks for the correction, Chas. I had only looked at the Sunday schedule.

Just a question....?
We are thinking of flying from Calif to Scotland with minimal plane changes which puts us into Glasgow instead of Edinburgh. Which is easier and closer to the airport, train or bus? How long does it take to go from Glasgow to Edinburgh? Keep in mind major jet lag!!!
Thanks!!!

Deloris, having screwed up this answer last week and spent some time researching it yesterday, I can definitively tell you that, whether or not you take the train or the bus from Glasgow to Edinburgh, you need to take a taxi or a bus from the airport to Central Glasgow. the bus from the door of the terminal will drop you either at Buchanan Street Bus station where you can get a bus to Edinburgh, or at Queen Street station where you can ditto a train.

ScotRail rocks. Cheap, and it runs every half hour.
