I took the train from Amsterdam to Cologne a few years back. Both train stations are right downtown so it is convenient. The trains are modern and very enjoyable.

I second the suggestion of train. We were on the ICE high speed train - really clean, efficient and comfortable.

Drect ICE trains take 2hr37min. Taking regional trains is a little cheaper, but several changes are required and the trip takes longer. See www.bahn.de for the timetables and fares.

Thank you - the bahn site says "fare not available" - does anyone have an idea? We are looking at public transport for four vs renting a car one way. How about a bus?

48.20 euro on ICE trains 2nd class; 37 euro on regional trains with two changes - these i got off the bahn.de site so check again. Cologne-Amsterdam Centraal. Prices on these trains should not vary from date to date, advance purchase, etc. i believe - standard price.

A Eurolines coach (bus) would be cheaper than the train, but service is limited. Depart Tuesday or Saturday at 08:00. Depart Monday-Wednesday-Saturday at 14:10. See www.eurolines.com.
