>>>>>But - I am perplexed as to why so many people think they wouldn't be able to shelter from the cold/get a coffee/use the bathroom anywhere outside of the US if McDonalds didn't exist! Believe it or not, Europe is not the third world - we do have hot drinks and sanitation here too.......

No doubt. It's just that McD's usually are the most convenient and less expensive place to find a quick snack and a relatively clean restroom, no matter where we travel. But I imagine you knew that.

The Bad News: In December 2001, during (ahem) a time of need, I had the misfortune to try one of those "relatively clean" McDonald's restrooms in Paris. It was the most filthy restroom I have ever encountered (well, since our apartment in college).

The Good News: I didn't eat there.

If you are ever in "need" in Venice you should try the restroom at the McDonalds. It has been about 5 years ago, but it was the worst EVER. You stand in line forever and it is co-ed with only 2 stalls. If I had not been desperate, I never would have done that. And the SMELL!!!

Rubbish! Every country has it's own affordable cafes and bars (usually with sanitation, believe it or not). You do not have to track down an American chain for that! Blimey - For a board supposed to be frequented by savvy and seasoned travellers there are some very parochial posts sometimes.

"And the SMELL!!!"

scatcat, I can empathize.

That story of mine about Paris was the straight poop. And I mean "straight poop."

I agree about the clean rest rooms at McDonald's; we aren't being parochial. I have a friend who is a tour guide in Rome and he always takes people to Mickey D's to use the karsy. It isn't just because they are clean, they are also FREE! I have never been stopped from using the toilet at McD's, but you can bet I have been told that I have to buy something when I have tried to use one at a London pub or cafe.

I am the savviest of the sav, not the chaviest of the chav.

How's this for a WIN-WIN solution?

Print Camilla's photo on all the packaging materials, charge McDonald's a royalty (sic) for its use.

Funds for the Crown; wipe out obesity!

It's amazing to me that in a nation where pubs have been serving chips as a side to lasagna, and putting mashed potatoes and chips on the same plate would have the nerve to blame MacDonald's for starting obesity problems.
