Are there any good day trips from Budapest that make it worth adding Budapest to our trip? In order to avoid the long train ride there...would it be better to fly from Prague to Budapest?

Day trips - Szentendre, one or both ways by water, rather touristy. Gondolo, half day by train or bus. I suppose Eger might be a day trip - you'd need to check the train times. See http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...ria-venice.cfm for my visit to Gondolo.

I'll jump in and also highly recommend Budapest. I agree w/ the poster who said though Prague IS beautiful, it is WAY too crowded and touristy. I found Vienna one of the most touristy places I've been and wish I'd skipped it. I also always felt like someone was trying to "take" me in Vienna (and caught many of them shortchanging me). I'd go back to Budapest in a heartbeat. Also, we took a hydrafoil boat down the Danube from Budapest to Vienna. About the same time as the train but beautiful, more relaxing, and FUN. Of course, I wouldn't skip Prague, it is stunning!
