Budapest vs. Prague!

First of all thanks for your input. My wife and I have not been to this part of Europe. We will be there next year on the way to a river cruise. We will probably have time to visit one or the other. Please give me your opinion about which city to visit and why. We love history, old buildings, good food and wine.

For one day, I would pick Prague. Lots of beautiful things to see, plus so much history to absorb, and a lot can be seen in that short amount of time. If you had a few days, I'd say Budapest, because while I LOVED Budapest, I think it would take more than a few hours to truly appreciate it. I was there for four days, and I certainly felt I needed more time to appreciate the beauty and the historical context. It's a little more gritty. Prague is also fabulous, and is more compact and easy to traverse and absorb in a short amount of time, in my opinion. All this said... you can't go wrong with either!

I've visited both, loved both. But, if only choosing one, I'd have to go with Prague. GORGEOUS! It's like a mini-Paris without the pretensiousness (I'm not a big fan of Paris). And it has a fabulous castle right in the middle of the city! Seriously, it has so much to see and is a lovely city.

People and food were great!

And, I don't even need to start about the beer!

I've been to Prague twice and Budapest once. Loved them both, it's too bad you can't split your time but I, too, would pick Prague. Again and again.

I was in Budapest for a day last year on a river cruise. I loved it. However, in researching for my upcoming river cruise (and land vacation), I've gotten really, really interested in Prague. At first I was afraid it would be too similar to Budapest, but now I've decided it really isn't. It looks wonderful! I vote for Prague!

Been to both, but Prague would be my first choice. Beautiful and easy to walk.

I agree with jmct714 - for one day I would pick Prague but for more than that I would pick Budapest. I love Budapest but you need more time to really get around and explore the city.

Been to both as well and loved both, but my heart is with Budapest. Both have rivers flowing through them, and beautiful vistas to observe, both have a lot of history, are filled with amazing architecture, really wonderful people and great food and wine and beer !). There is a lot to see and do in Prague, for sure, but I love the relaxed pace and cool vibe of Budapest, of seeming like a ...'sprawling' city (as I felt with Prague in 3 days) even though it is a large city. Its neighborhoods are lovely and the Danube links it all together.
If its only a day that you have, I would choose either quite happily. They are both marvellous cities in their own way. But totally agree with previous posters that Budapest requires a couple of days to explore and discover its groove. I've been there 4 times now and find new things to do everytime.

Sorry, should read "...of NOT seeming like a sprawling city..."
