We're planning to travel by train from Prague to Munich in early April. We understand there is a night train available, and that's an attractive option. But we're hesitant because we don't want to miss any truly great landscapes.

So, anyone who's done this trip -- Sleep or scenery: What's your vote?

It depends which route you're taking. Munich-Deggendorf is not that spectacular, flat terrain, farms, fields. (2.5h) From there you'll be going through the Bavarian/Bohemian forest, nice scenery, mountains, small villages. After that again, it's not that interesting. Or you'd go via Regensburg, Schwandorf and Pilsen (Cz). Lots of trees , rural, slow paced towns. In fact, it's Bavaria at it's best. (FOOD included!) It would be a good idea to stay somwhere in the Bavarian Forrest for a day, to get an impression of unspoiled, inexpensive towns and places.

I couldn't decide, either, so I took the overnight train from Munich to Prague and on my way back to Munich took the day train. If I had to do it over, I'd take the night train back to Munich, too! I don't think I missed any landscape on that route that wasn't more spectacular somewhere else.

Can you sleep on trains? To me that is the more important question to answer for your decision.

I don't know this route myself, but personally love overnight trains (if you spring for a private cabin).

Sleep..too long and too boring. I sleep like a log on the train.

Thanks folks. I love to sleep on moving conveyances (boats, trains, anything but planes). DH hasn't done it yet, so he may be groggy!

Added bonus: The night train saves us one hotel bill.

Never been to Europe..Going next month. Want to take the night train from Prague to Munich like yourself. Where do I get a reservation on the train. There are several names of trains in Europe. I've been on the eurorail site but can't seem to find the night train from Prague to Munich. Please help.

The night train travels vis Nurnberg and Regensburg. I agree there are lots of trees over the Czech portion; somewhat more scenic over the latter German portion.

Nothing spectacular and if the night train is convenient I would take it.

We got our tickets via the Deutschebahn web site, www.bahn.de.

Put in your journey dates and you'll see several options for departures from Prague. The 21:46 train is the night train (Europe operates on a 24-hour military-style clock, so that's 9:46 p.m. Arrival in Munich is about 6:30 a.m.

If you want a sleeper, you need to reserve it.
