Check out the Hotel Metamorphis
ww.hotelmetamorphis.cz
It has loads of character, mostly excellent and no bad reviews on TR and a superb location for someone whose walking may be limited. The hotel is in a small square that is directly behind the Tyn Church which itself is at the far end of the Old Town square and astronomical clock. The are many restaurants and an excellent coffee shop within a short walk. Ditto for shopping and an outdoor market which is about a 5 minute walk. Being in the square behind the Old Town square means easy access to the OT square without the noise and bustle.

I have used Air B NB, for stays in Europe. It has always worked well. and, gives you the opportunity, to spend your stay with the people. The flats are all equipped with everything you need, to make your own food, including that morning cuppa, that you miss in a hotel !

Take a look at The Augustine. Leading Hotels of the World has a 3rd night free rate, giving an average 177.55 EUR for a Classic Queen or 278.05 EUR for a Superior Deluxe King room. A rollaway for an extra guest is 75 EUR, unless the fee can be waived. A very nice hotel… there's a review on FlyerTalk: http://tinyurl.com/pwezacr

We stayed at the Four Seasons. It was relatively inexpensive (at the time) for a Four Seasons. Great location near Old Town and Charles Bridge.

On the budget end of the spectrum is www.lublanka.cz.
2 of us stayed in a room on May that fit 3 easily; 1 block from the Pavlova metro stop w/breakfast included

Cross check, I am leaning towards the iron gate because of its central location combined with Patio. We made reservations there. For a two room suite for 220 euros. if my son decides not to join us, we will reconsider

All the recommended hotels seemed very nice, but we are saving our splurge for Vienna where we will stay at the hotel Sacher.

You have bad knees ,so you are going to have to rest when walking no matter which hotel you choose.

All the names of hotels that were given here are in pretty decent locations.

Everyone seems to want to be near the Old Town Square and/or Charles Bridge because that is "where the actions is", as crowded as it is ...and it will be crowded.

You mentioned that a view would be a plus and because of that I would agree with travelhorizons about the Four Seasons which is 2 blocks from Charles Bridge.
BUT...

I would ask for a room with a view towards the Vltava River and the Prague Castle and the Charles Bridge.

Then in the late evening (resting your weary knees !!) you can sit by the window and look across the river towards the Little Quarter ( Mala Strana) and watch the riverboats glide by and get the reflection in the water from the night lights.

This is not to say that the other hotels and locations given are not good.

All booked hmmmm! Okay let us try across the river from the Four Season to a place called:

At the Three Ostriches, get a room facing Charles Bridge and you will feel like if you fall out your window you will (almost) land on Charles Bridge.

Here is the link.

http://www.utripstrosu.cz/en/

or:

www.aurushotel.cz ( This is on of the places I stayed at)

1. Click on Home Location and you will see on the map that it is just about 2 blocks straight down from Charles Bridge.

2. then click on Photo Gallery.
I took a suite because the price was only about $20.00 more even though there was just the two of us.

3. then click on Virtual tour of the room(s) you want to see.

4. That lady behind the desk in the pink blouse, is the very one you will see.

For one of the best views in Prague it is hard to beat the Kampa Gardens. Think of it as high end budget, i.e., very nice, comfortable, not luxurious, average breakfast. It is on Kampa Island under the Charles Bridge. Most rooms in front of the hotel have views of the Vlatva and Old Town on the other side. It is next to a park that has benches with the above view. The island itself is a quiet oasis in the midst of the hubbub that can be Prague in season. There are stairs and a ramp leading up onto the Charles Bridge which is why I did not suggest it for someone with bad knees.

Your absolutely right basingstoke2.

I remember walking there , the main street has a line of trees in the middle and at the end of the street on the corner is a

building with a Blue Fox over the door.
This is the Embassy of Estonia.

I always remember this building because I have a dear friend in Tallinn Estonia and I was tell him that I saw his country's Embassy in Prague.

But you are right this is a nice place.

Thanks Percy - a few of the front rooms at the Kampa Gardens only have a view of the back of the embassy, so one does not ask for those. After a day of touring, there is nothing like sitting on a park bench and watching Old Town light up before going out for the evening. There are a couple of excellent restaurants on the Island as well.

We also have stayed at the Three Ostriches hotel with a room looking out at the Charles Bridge.

Very convenient to the old town one way and up the hill to the castle the other way.
