I would like to plan a trip to Prague, Vienna, Salzberg area next year. Mid to late August or October would be the best time for us to go. Which would be better - considering weather and crowds.

With a light overcoat October is still fine for weather. August is baking hot, and crowded

IIRC, in August of '68 the place was mobbed with visitors from Eastern Europe and Russia.

Ira: On that note, I seem to remember a lot of people crowding the streets of Prague in October of 1989!

I went at the end of October (21-29) - the hills were awash in fall colors, one day it would be blue skys, the next would be grey and drizzeling. By the end of of my visit the trees had lost most of their leaves. Next time i visit Prgaue in the fall I'll aim for the beginning of October.

But as for going either August or October - definitely October
