Prado -- video allowed?

Will be visiting the Prado in May. Does anyone know if you can take pictures and videos inside? If you can, is there a charge for doing this?

Appreciate your help.

I think you can take pictures with no flash, but I don't believe video is allowed. And the Prado is heavily patrolled, so I don't think you would even want to sneak a few shots.

Great museum though.

It's been a few years since we were there, but we were under the impression you couldn't take stills or videos. However, once inside the cameras were clicking (without flash) and camcorders and were out and rolling! Unfortunately, our cameras were checked.

One thing that had never occurred before when visiting an art museum, we weren't allowed to take our water bottles inside. This happened again last November in Las Vegas, when we visited a temporary exhibit in the Venetian.

I just checked the website (www.theprado.com) and unfortunately it's under construction. Thought I might find the info you need there, but no luck. We loved the Prado and enjoyed seeing paintings we had previously only seen in books. Enjoy your visit.

Hi,

the official website is :
http://museoprado.mcu.es/home.html

They don´t say anything about cameras and videos, so I have written to them asking about.

I was there last week, and while there was people taking pictures, I didn´t see any videocameras.

My apologies happywanderer and thanks to Cova for providing the correct website for the Prado. Obviously the site I found that was under construction was incorrect.

Hi Giovanna,
probably they were just trying to drive people to the wrong sit

Most of the websites of the museums belonging to the spanish Ministery of Culture follow the same pattern :
nameofmuseum.mcu.es

So, you have :
http://museoreinasofia.mcu.es
http://museosefardi.mcu.es
and so on ...

More here : http://www.mcu.es/museos/intro.jsp

I will ask at the museum next week, and I´ll let you know.

Many thx for your replies. We will typically have our camera and camcorder with us. So, if we are allowed to take pictures w/o flash, fine, if not, that's ok too.

We will be in the Prado and our eyes will be our cameras!

Thanks Cova for the additional websites. I just added them to my favorites and I'm embarrassed to say I had the correct website for the Prado listed there! Guess I've compiled so much travel info in my favorites, I can't find what I need! LOL

Enjoy your visit to the Prado happywanderer and enjoy Madrid. Our trip to Spain was one of our favorites.

Hi happywanderer (and the rest),

I have got an answer from the Prado Museum. In short :
- videotaping is NOT allowed
- photography is allowed WITHOUT flash or tripode
- videotaping and photography is NOT allowed in the temporal exhibitions

But ... due to the problems they are having to inforce the no-flash, no-tripod rule (and I have been a witness to a very angry man not wanting to switch off the flash near Las Meninas ...), they are planning to forbid all videotaping and all photography in its rooms. This will be done in a month or less.

Sorry for the bad news, but it always ends up like that ...
