positano or capri

I have only 4 nights in the Amalfi area. From a nightlife perspective, which is the preferred place to stay, and has the better restaurants, Capri or Positano?

I see this is your first post so I would like to make a friendly suggestion. Please do not tag your question as a trip report. A trip report is when you are telling us about a trip you've already taken.

Good luck in getting the answers you need, there are a lot of knowledgeable posters on this board. ;-)

kellyba this is a question that goes round and round on this forum. I much prefer Positano and would consign Capri to a day trip, if you must see it. Positano has a better range of hotels and a wider range of restaurants too.

It is very steep however, and not suited to people with mobility restrictions. Positano as a base will also give easier access to the Amalfi coast and Sorrento. You will probably now get the opposite view from a number of posters!

If you're a Saudi Princess, a VANITY FAIR reporter, and/or you don't remove your sunglasses until after dark, Capri. For everyone else ( including me!!) Positano . Decide which suits you and let us know. I have a couple of restaurant/hotel suggestions to make, and I'm sure a lot of other posters do, too. Have fun!

Hi kellyba! A couple of years ago I asked myself this same question! I chose Positano and what a great decision I made!!! I still dream about beautiful Positano and the Amalfi Coast! I do hope to someday visit Capri, but I definitely will visit Positano again someday soon!!!

Right now I have until June 18th to make a decision on where to spend 4 nights in the Amalfi Coast,,, Positano or Capri,,In Positano I reserved the Palazzo Murat and in Capri the Villa Sarah. Is the nightlife better in one or the other, since we are late nite types..?? thanks for your help with this!

I'm betting the "nightlife" might be a disappointment in both places, depending on what you're looking for. Frankly, I think Sorrento might be more lively.

Positano and Capri are both gloriously beautiful; postcard places. But I think they are pretty sedate.

How old are you, are you conversant in Italian, who will you be going with, where are you from and what do you mean by "nightlife"? That will frame my next response.

My guess is that if you're looking for clubs and real nightlife, Capri is the place. Sorrento has decent nightlife, too, but it's more geared to the package tour crowd. Capri has lots of fashionistas and jet setters, which isn't my thing in life, but if you like that, go for it. I like the slower pace of the coastal towns, and the easy access from one town to another by bus, boat, car, something that is a little trickier to and from Capri.

To arizonaa: In between Sorrento and Positano, there's a wonderful restaurant that's called something like DUE PAESE ( two steps). Had a great dinner there.

In and around Positano, we actually like the mountain village of Montepertuso, which has several restaurants that are very good. Many of them provide transfers, so ask at your hotel. We liked: DONNA ROSA and IL RITROVO, but there are others, too.

I will check my files for other names and post back. Have a great time!

I think Capri has far better for night life, but the season may not be in full swing until July.
As to restaurants, Positano. But what's your criteria?

A suggestion for Amalfi, and how could I have forgotten this one?? DA GEMMA, which is very close to the beautiful cathedral and has outside dining. LOVED our seafood dishes there. Pasta was excellent, too. You can easily get to Amalfi by boat from Positano (town dock), and I recommend doing it this way rather than by bus which in season can be extremely crowded.

We also had wonderful pizza in Amalfi, again close to the cathedral. I'll see if I can find the name...
