My husband and I will be spending some time in Italy in late August/early September. We are starting our trip in Florence (3 nights) , renting a car and driving through Tuscany (3 nights) and after dropping the car off in Naples making our way to Positano. I am taking the recommendations from fellow travelers/previous post of not taking the car rental with us to Positano; instead we will be using public transportation while in the AC. My question is as follows;

Is 5 days in Positano too long? Should we consider spending a couple days in Capri or would a day trip to Capri be enough? We are also planning day trips to Amalfi, Rovelo, and other nearby towns. If 2 days in Capri is a good idea could someone recommend a good B&B preferably with water access?

Drive to Sorrento to drop the car and spend 2 nites here.
See Pompeii or Capri from Sorrento.

Taxi to Positano to spend the next 3 nites, seeing Ravello and Amalfi one day from here.

I have spent 7-8 days in Positano each June for the last 5 years and never get bored. There are many great day trips from Pos via ferry, including Capri, Amalfi/Ravello, Salerno and Vietri. With 5 days, I would not waste time changing locations.

If you are traveling this August/September, get to booking your accommodations ASAP. September is still high season and many places book a year in advance.

We actually already booked a B&B in Nocelle but now that we are relying on public transportation I am wondering if I should instead look for something closer to town. Another option would be to spend 2 nights in town (already have a B&B in mind) then spend 3 nights in Nocelle.

We once found 5 days very sufficient...the boat trip from Positano to Capri stops at the green grotto..one day traipsin around then back to Positanto would be my suggestion. Also, I believe that one day (by boat) to Amalfi, bus to Ravello and then back to Positano would round out five active days, still giving you ample time in Positano itself.

We enjoyed the Bucca di Baca (on the beach...large private terraces, great views...beautifully appointed rooms...good on site restaurant). Make all reservation as soon as possible.

CAPRI IS WONDERFUL.....Staying in Capri is FABULOUS, & a completely different experience then just going for the day.


I agree with above suggestions from "TOWER."

AMALFI, RAVELLO are great and worth a visit. I am not a big fan of Salerno, but love Positano and even though you can not stay at Buca di Bacco.....have lunch or dinner there!

Don't know about B&Bs
You need to get your Hotel (or B & B if you prefer)reservations secured AT ONCE. Positano is active popular destination....so is Capri.

Try Palazzo Murat....fabulous hotel and great location.

You've left it incredibly late to book for what is essentially THE busiest time of the year in Positano.

It is no good anyone giving you recommendations. You'll have to search Booking.com with your dates and see what is available.

Agree w Bob the Navigator to spend nights in Sorrento for Capri & Pompeii, then 3 in Positano, from which you can venture to Amalfi, Ravello and the like. Caution: the SITA bus runs on its own schedule; be patient, and do not rely on published schedules. It's going to be VERY busy & congested, I'd investigate boat travel along the AC and not via the one main road.

Capri is much nicer and more magical after the day trippers leave. If you decide to stay there, look at Hotel La Minerva, small boutique hotel with beauriful water views.

I agree with bobthenavigator. Drop the car off in Sorrento, stay two nights and visit Pompeii. Then ferry to Positano and spend the rest of your time there in the village if you can find accommodation. I think staying in Nocelle would be quite inconvenient for such a short stay. Good luck finding accommodation at this late date.

If you want to include Capri, I would spend two nights there and the rest in Positano or Amalfi.


Nocelle is inconvenient for bus transport to the other coastal towns.

I spent a week once in Amalfi and it was not at all too long. I did not have a car on that trip. If you want to stay in a coastal town for 5 days, and go out at night to eat in various towns, I might consider keeping the car and staying at a hotel with free parking. I did this a few years ago, staying at Tramonto d'Oro in Praiano. A car allows you to make an easy day trip to Paestum and to the mozzarella farms near there. And maybe visit Vietri for ceramics, and Cetara for the some of the best restaurants in the entire region.

My hotels are booked in Positano (this is not an issue), I was just wondering if it was worth making some changes to the reservation in order to spend a couple days in Capri rather than the entire time in Positano (5 days).

Initially we were going to keep our car rental the entire time, however, I was strongly advised against driving in AC by other fellow travelers (this is still an option however). I agree that having our own car would offer us greater flexibility as we would not have to depend on public transportation which can be quite unpredictable this time of year based on what I have heard.

I hope you were able to find a hotel actually in Positano, not Nocelle.

The SITA bus is unpredictable. The ferries are very reliable and is my favorite mode of transportation when staying in Positano.

Ferries were wonderful & hassel free in Positano......beautiful water, great to see the amazing coastline.

Our trip started in Capri for several days, then on to Positano.
Arrived in Positano (by boat) and it was wonderful!!! Very dramatic view to arrive in Positano by boat.

I just love that part of the world.
