Portugal coastal town no more than a 4/5 hour drive from Spain?
Hi, We will be driving with our 3 and 6 year old daughters from Galicia, Spain to Portugal. Our ideal is the Algarve area but it is too far of a drive with our kids. Any equal alternatives that are closer? We would love to spend time just in one area, sitting at the beach but also with the perks of a being a local in a quaint beautiful town that has great food and charming architecture.
Thanks in advance!

The Algarve is about 7 hrs drive. It is beautiful! We just returned from Tavira, which is exactly what you would like: a quaint beautiful town that has great food and charming architecture. It is still very authentic.
My son once spent a holiday in Vila Praia de Ancora (Costa Verde), which is very near Galicia. It has beautiful fine sandy beaches and it is close to Viana do Castelo, which he found pretty authentic, too. You must be lucky with the weather, though (which he was!).

Not only is that drive a long one…the time given will not include stops for coffee meals or toilet. It is also all on a busy highway.
There a loads of beaches in and around Galicia and in Northern Portugal.

I actually can help.
Last Summer we spent time in Salir do Porto. It is a beach town, very small on the Silver Coast.
It is perfect for small children as the bay is horse shoe shaped and the beach area is large and sandy. The water there is very calm and perfect for small children.
There is a boardwalk the goes around the bay to San Martinho do Porto which is much bigger and very busy.
We liked Salir for enjoying the beach and if we wanted we could walk to San Martinho for more activities.
We rented a very nice house close to the beach and walked the short distance. There is also a large parking lot at the beach if you want to drive. And there is a small adequate restaurant right at the beach.
It is about four hours from Galicia.
It is a very quiet village. It is quaint but does not have charming architecture but it is very close to Obidos and lots of things in that area to see.

Try the Las Islas Cies, which are quite beautiful and easily reached by ferry from Vigo.

Or try Malpica in Galicia. It is a family beach area that few others besides Galegos frequent.
