Pompeii

I am taking my first trip to Italy the end of March. From Rome, we would like to go to Pompeii for a day. It costs about $300 for two people to take a chartered bus from Rome to Pompeii and back again. Is there a less expensive way to get to Pompeii and back?
Thank you.

Yes. From Rome you can take a train to Naples. Check trenitalia.com for schedules and prices, but it should be 20-25 euros each way and 1.5-2 hours each way. From Naples, you switch to a local commuter train, Circumvesuviana, that costs about 5 euros each way and takes 40 minutes to Pompeii Scavi.

You would need to look at the pricing. The slower train takes 3 hours, and costs around €15 each way, the fast train takes 2 hours and costs around €65-70 return. There is a fast train at 6:45. with the last fast train returning at around 9:20pm.

From Naples station, go downstairs and get the circumvesuviana to Pompeii Scavi station (estimated cost around €3-4 return - journey time est 45-60 minutes).

Far cheaper, and even the possibility of seeing Pompeii in the morning , then the NAtional Archaeology museum in the late afternoon /evening.

Hi Sebastian - There is a Rome-Pompeii bus service (- operator: Marozzi) which departs Rome (- Roma Tiburtina bus station) at 07.00*

Fare:
€ 16.00 - one way
€ 27.50 - return

# The return service leaves Pompeii at 17.45.

This is your cheapest option.

www.marozzivt.it

Alternatively you can do it by train (- with a change of train in Naples).

For details see:
http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

If you don't wish to spend all day in Pompeii you could go by bus and return by train.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

# The return Marozzi bus can also be caught from Sorrento - if you wish to spend the afternoon there ...

Absolutely. You can take any train to Naples from Termini station in Rome. In Naples you go down to the station's lower level and take the Circumvesuviana ( a commuter train)to the Pompeii Scavi station, which is right at the entrance to the Pompeii site.

The chartered bus tours mostly make stops for lunch and souvenir shopping, making the day longer than it needs to be and the visit to Pompeii itself shorter. There is a shuttle bus from Rome to Pompeii operated by www.enjoyrome.com, which does not make such stops and costs considerably less, but according to the website it doesn't start running for the season until April. I took it a few years ago at the end of March, though, so it might be worth checking to see if it is running yet.

Hi S,

Use www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html for trains in Italy. It is easier tha n the trenitalia dot com.

The Circumvesuviana is located at the Garibaldi station, which is the lower level of the Naples Centrale train station.

You want the Pompei Scavi stop.

Do not take the train from Rome to Pompeii.

Start early. It will be along day.

I agree, take the train from Rome to Naples, and then the local train to Pompeii Scave -- it couldn't be simpler, and train is a much more enjoyable way to travel than bus. If you depart early, you should also have time to either visit Herculaneum or some of Naples.

I think the bus is a much better and easier option.
