Hey, everyone. The place she is staying with her friends is not near Nimes. She said she's staying in le Clos, which is next to La Couvertoirade and Le Caylar - both quite close to that new bridge that just opened near Millau. That's quite a jaunt from Nimes - much closer to Montpellier. We just returned from 3 weeks in that area, and St Cirq went through there on her un-planned trip.

I would fly or take the TGV to Montpellier, stay in Le Clos for 4 days. The last day before the flight home, drive to Aigues Mortes, stay overnight & fly to Paris for the return home, or drive to Montpellier, stay overnight & take the TGV to Paris CDG (it arrives at 11:21 am.)

Oh, DUH! How did I miss that? Yes, forget Avignon, DEFINITELY forget Nice, and I love the idea of a night in Aigues-Mortes (though Montpellier isn't a bad next best).

The friends live in Cros, which is due north of Montpelier (NW of Nimes and SW of Ales). The reasoning for Nice is theoretically warmer and airport to fly via EasyJet, again theoretically as a time saver versus train.

Is La Clos the same as Cros?

Have I confused everyone now?

Yes, it will probably be a bit warmer, but it certainly won't be a time saver.

I'll second the suggestion to spend some time in the Loire Valley. The town of Amboise is charming, and central to visiting many of the more famous chateaux. We stayed at Le Vieux Manoir - owned by Boston natives Gloria and Bob Belknap. It was so delightful. Relaxing, beautiful. The countryside was some of the prettiest I had ever seen.

If it's the latter, I apologize. Who would have thought that planning a trip could cause so much angst?

Sorry - spelling error when I wrote "le Clos"

There is a "le Cros" just next to La Couvertoirade, and a "Cros" next to Ganges. Both are north of Montpellier. Le Cros is farther west, so I'll assume you mean the Cros just east of Ganges.

We vacationed within 10K of Cros for 1 week in '02, and within 20K of le Cros for 1 week this year and within 40K for 2 weeks this year.

Read the Languedoc itinerary I sent you - I have several suggestions for each area.

Definitely see Montpellier while you are there. I love that city, so charming and historical. The Botanical Gardens are my favorite, as well as the nearby park/public space area by the Romanesque arch, mini lake, overlooking the old aqueduct. (An aside, the shopping is great there! I got some of the best bargain prices on both childrens' clothing and shoes there than in any other town in Provence that I visited).

Driving or taking the train (no TGV, remember!) over to Nice will take several hours, plus the necessary hour in advance when getting to the airport. So there goes a good half day that otherwise could have been spent around Avignon. If you take the TGV back to Paris from Avignon you only have to get to the station a short time before your train leaves, and you arrive in the heart of Paris rather than a lengthy minute drive in from the airport: another time-saver.

I second Underhill's suggestion: driving/taking the train from the Cévennes to Nice is quite an ordeal I wouldn't even do myself as a Frenchman with so little time on my hands. Climatewise, Montpellier is the same as Nice, give or take one or two degrees (Celsius). And don't overestimate travel fatigue, especially towards the end of such an itineray. Plus, EasyJet does not arrive on the same terminal at CDG than intercontinental flights, you'll have to take a long shuttle, to cut a long story short I think you are asking for a lot a trouble by going to Nice. If I were you I would just concentrate on the Montpellier/Nîmes/Avignon area and take advantage of the TGV's direct links from these towns to CDG 2. For the record, early March, snow would not be unusual in the Cévennes.
