I would suggest taking the train right from Munich's airport to Garmisch and picking up the car there - far less hassle to get a car in a smaller town on a day when you will likely be jet-lagged, when you apparently won't be sightseeing in Munich, and when you don't need the logistical aggravation. On 12/24, the train will cost you 21 Euros for two (ask for a "Bayern Ticket", a daypass good all over Bavaria on the regional trains.

Actually, a car seems unnecessary altogether for your chosen destinations and perhaps a headache in traffic-clogged Vienna or if weather is wintery.

It looks very doable. If you have the time, make sure you visit Oberamergau while in Garmish -- and Ettal on the way. You'll have a great trip.

As for the train, if atimmons is anything like me, he'll be doing a lot of day trips in and around the areas, and the convenience of a car, in my opinion, far outweigh the costs associated.

Have an Augustiner Beer in Munich for me.

I am a big fan of rail transportation to and form airports. The train or subway does not get stuck in traffic. There is a direct train connection from the Munich airport to the city. You might want to consider that as an alternative to the bus.

Why drive when all your locations can be easily and cheaply gotten to by train and weather and parking are adverse factors?

A couple of years ago I did a Vienna-Berlin-Zurich-Munich trip by train. The passes we purchased were for 5 days of travel within 30 days. You might want to look for something similar.

If you are planning to squeeze in some daytrips in and out of Vienna or Munich, a car may come in handy. If not, a car seems more of a burden than a convenience.

If you plan to use the train there, I'd suggest purchasing regular tickets rather than a railpass. To give you an idea of the cost, the Austrian train website shows a fare of 95 Euros for two between Innsbruck and Vienna; 75 for two between Vienna and Salzburg. Between Munich and the Austrian border, you can use either the daypasses mentioned above on the regional trains or purchase regular tickets on the high speed equipment; regular fare on the fast trains runs around 60 Euros for two between Salzburg and Munich. So altogether, I think you're looking at about 250 euros for train tickets max.

How many people are in your party?

I agree with Michael concerning train to/from Munich airport. The S-1 and S-8 both from the Hauptbahnhoff will get you there fast and reasonable. They even have a family pass that my wife and I used. I had no problem lugging my wife's kitchen sink on the train, both ways. Then take a taxi from the Munich Train station to the rental car agency. Should be fairly inexpensive.

I agree on the extra day for Garmish. Just to see Lindenhof, Ettal and Oberamergau will take up an entire day. Additionally, there is a lot to see in the Garmish area and you may want to see Neuschweinstein. In Salzburg, you may want to take a day trip to St. Gilgen and Hallstatt.

I personally feel it would be tough seeing all the stuff in the Garmish area and be held hostage to a train schedule, but it's your call.

Russ--When I got the three countries 5 day travel train pass, it cost $180 per person. But prices may have gone up.

I like the new itinerary much better. There are several good hotels in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This summer we stayed at Reindls Partenkirchner Hof which was nice and had a very good restaurant.(near the train station) I also looked at The Posthotel Partenkirchen which looked good and also has a good restaurant. These are both in Partenkirchnen. In Garmisch there is Romantik hotel Clausings Posthotel which is suppose to be good and also have a good restuarant. Ghe gasthof Fraundorfer is a fun place to eat at with typical german fare and slap dancing...inexpensive. (its in Partenkirchen) The Alpenhof is also a good restaurant (good hunters sauce). Innsbruck is an easy drive from Garmisch. You might want to stop and see Mittenwald on the way. It is a very cute town with alot of buildings painted with the scenes. We also stayed one night in Innsbruck. It will give you a taste of the city but not too much time. We stayed at the Hilton which had good rates. It is very modern with a casino. Salzburg is beautiful. I really liked the restaurant Arlich there. The food was excellent. We also stayed at the SAS Palais in Vienna. It is a nice hotel...beautiful lobby and good location. Have a great trip. The drivig is actually very easy (unless it snows I guess).

Michael - that ball park estimate of 250 Euros on point-to-point tix was for TWO people.

Several summers ago, we did a comparable itinerary, but dipped down into the wonderful Italian Alps instead of going east to Vienna. The drive through the Dolomite mountain range is incredibly scenic, as is the road over the Grossglockner (sp?) Pass south of Salzburg. An unforgetable couple days if
you can bear to pass on Vienna. And it's a very easy drive back up to Munich (we left from Bolzano after we checked out "Ötzi the Iceman&quot.

Warning: Driving in Munich is a mess. The names of streets change without warning. We found Salzburg difficult as well. Other than those two cities, however, using a rental car was no problem at all and VERY convenient.

My one big question is why Garmisch for a full day? If you are going to visit Neuschwanstein and the other castle of the Mad King, then I say it is as good as any.

One thing I really think you need to factor in is the restricted hours of daylight. You will have about 8 hours a day when you can see with natural light. It is not like July when you have 15 hours of good viewing light.

Also, other than the Habsburg castle in Innsbruck, which is impressive, I never really fell in love with the place.
Perhaps I am jaded, but in 3 visits, I would now opt for elsewhere. If you have never been there, as I had not been years ago, I had to satisfy my curiosity. And I did, quickly.

Again, I may be prejudiced, but Salzburg, for all its hype, is a charming place in the old city.
But other than the fortress on the hill, which will be cold to your feet, you can see a lot in the old town quickly.
Vienna is a little different.
If there are musical performances to go to, and if you like classical type music, you will want to devote time to Vienna. It was the cradle and center of a major empire for many years. The remnants are interesting; and much of the city recalls the imperial might of the past. Some faded; some worn, but historically interesting.

The Lufthansa bus leaves from Terminal A and the new terminal at the Strauss Airport.
