Places to stay between Pisa and CT?

I was going to piggy back this on my "winging it" post, but decided to start a new thread instead. Before we get to the CT we are going to visit Pisa. I was thinking we should find a place to stay in Pisa for one night, but now I'm wondering if there might be some nice places/towns in between Pisa and the CT where we might stay. We will be driving. Anyone have any suggestions?

grazie (our trip is only 5 weeks away!)

Try asking on the slowtravel site (http://slowtalk.com/groupee/) as several of the regular posters there live in that region.

The obvious town that springs to mind is Lucca.

Is it possible to go straight to the CT since it's only about an hour or so from Pisa? Just a thought.

You might like to explore the seaside towns around Lerici/Portovenere. Or go up the hill into Sarzana. Or take an adventurous detour into the mountains, to the Garfagnana.

But I agree it's not a long drive between Pisa and Cinque Terre that needs to be broken up.
