Pipe Organ recitals in London

I have looked at a couple of Cathedral pages and see that most offer an organ recital Sunday evenings. Is one better than another for acoustic sound? This is one of the big things I would like to do before going back to the states.

Thanks!
The organs of the cathedrals, Abbey, and churches of London vary in tone and quality, and experts can discriminate amongst them. I am no expert, and go to what is nearby and suits my mood. Time Out weekly listings magazine lists most organ recitals, and others are in the monthly City list of events, available free from the tourist information pavilion just south of St Paul?s. Also, you can ask Mr Sargeant for the City list by e-mail from about the twentieth of the previous month: "Martin Sargeant" [email protected]

If you are discreet you can, indeed, seek advice on tones and styles of organs, perhaps by phoning the Royal College of Church Music. I doubt that anybody serious will be ready to speak of a better or a worse.

As well as the range of places there is a range of times, and many seventeenth century churches in the City (as against the city) hold recitals at one, and some at six.

Welcome to London

[email protected]
I should have added, that if you want settings older than the rather modern St Paul?s and Westminster cathedrals, you can try the fourteenth century Southwark Cathedral for sunshine and the twelfth century St Bartholomew the Great for weight.

Ben Haines

Thanks so much, I've checked out the pages recommended and I'll find at least one to go to. I love to go to the cathedrals, but haven't managed to catch a recital yet.
