My DH and I went to Greece for a month in June 2014. We had a wonderful time. We visited Kos, Rhodes, Crete, Santorini, Mykonos, Delphi, Olympia, Nafplio, Epidarus and Athens. It's obviously too late to warn you against riding the poor abused donkeys, but it's not too late for you to remove any references to them. They are deprived of water, shade and rest, forced to run up and down all those steps all day long and the donkey men secretly poke them with a sharp stick or with a nail tip they can remove from their stick to avoid detection. Some saddles are in such poor condition that they chafe the donkey hide, sometimes causing open sores.

I agree very much with brotherleelove. Unfortunately the Greeks do not have a culture of animal welfare. They are mules and not donkeys. The photos are quite clear as to what kind of animal they are. I'm not sure why they are always referred to as donkeys. Mules are extremely strong, there is no way a donkey can carry that weight up and down the steps but that is no excuse to ride them.

It's not so much whether they are mules or donkeys, but the conditions these animals are subjected to while working all day in the hot sun. Greece isn't the only country where animal welfare is a low priority. This story appeared in <i>The Telegraph</i> today:
