Performance Advice Needed for Salzburg/Vienna

Hello. Any suggestions on seeing what & where? Is the Marionette show nice in Salzburg? We wanted something charming and different. And where is the best locale to see a concert in Vienna? And Salzburg..... it seems some of the venues look to be somewhat ....lacking.
We love all classical music.....

Thanks!

I can recommend the 3 euro (or so) standing room tix at Vienna Opera House. You can experience the venue but leave without guilt when you've had enough. Go early, leave a shawl to "reserve" your standing space, or just stay put and enjoy the place.

As a charming and most entertaining alternative to opera, you should consider Austria's invention, the operetta. Austria is a country with lots of Lehar, Strauss--and Straus, Kalman and many others. We saw The Merry Widow at Vienna's Stadtsoper in 2000 but, more recently, in 2006, we took a short train ride (about 35-40 minutes I recall) to Baden. where operettas are performed in an open roof theatre in the summer in the park. It was a delightful experience: we saw die Zirkusprinssen and, like most operettas, it was full of solid singing and not a little comedy, all of which transcended any language barrier.

I don't have a link, but here's a copy of the most recent newsletter:

OPERETTE WIENER BLUT

Hymnische Kritiken

I ordered tickets quite easily online. Baden is a very pleasant little town, easy for walking, and it has, of course, baths.

Thank you! We are traveling Sept 1...starting in Munich...going to Salzburg...on to Vienna. We had considered taking a side trip to Baden anyway, so that is a fine idea. I did see something on the Mozarthaus. Is that as good as it looks on the website?

Maria; Look for yk's trip report on Vienna and you will have much more information. In Salzburg, we did the Mozart Dinner concert and had a lovely time. You sit eating dinner at a table with six other people and meet folks from other countries. There are also church concerts and one at the Mirabel Palace. Of course, then there is the concert the husband needs a 'tux' for. Forgot the venue. Richard salzburg-concerts.com

Vienna and Salzburg lacking music- I do not think you look very much. Season beginning during the first weeks of September

Vienna

Musikverein

www.musikverein.at

Volksoper

www.volksoper.at

Konzerthaus

www.konzerthaus.at

Theater an der Wien

www.theater-wien.at

just one hightlight September 14 I think
Harmoncourt conducts the Vienna Philharmonic - also Lang Lang

Salzburg -
depending upon time of visit the annual

Salzburg Festspiele

salzburg Theater offerings

Baden summer offerings end at the beginning of September- probably miss this as it normally finishes the first weekend of September

in September - the Grafenegg Musik Festival - easy reserved bus transfer from Vienna.

Vienna Philharmonic
Cleveland Orchestra among many others.
www.grafenegg.at

If you refer to Mozarthaus Vienna - a small old but beautiful venue - regular concerts aimed to tourist market but OK
The venue said to be the oldest concert location in Vienna.

sorry if I wasn't clear about the lacking comment....there is a lot...it's simply that people have said that some venues are better than others.

Vienna State Opera

www.staatsoper.at

one of the premiere opera houses of the world.

Musikverein

home to the Vienna Philharmonic - home to the famous New Years Concert shown worldwide
most world known conductors have been there to lead various orchestras.

Perhaps the most acoustic perfect house built.

Vienna Volksoper - home to excelent performances - many operettas by world known composers - Strauss, Lehar, Mozart Kalman

Theater an der Wien

the 3rd and recently renovated opera house of the city.

Konzerthaus -

well known also

Thus a choice of world class venues and offerings
I think you will find them better than the Marionette theatre.
We have one of those in Vienna too.
