Innsbruck or Vienna

We are planning our honeymoon in Europe we want to vist Austria for two days from Interlaken Switzerland. We have two or three days would you recommend taking an overnight train to Vienna or taking a shorter train to Innsbruck? Is there enough to see in Inssbruck? Thank you.

The main sights in Innsbruck are the ski jump and the golden roof. On the other hand Vienna's sights go on and on from the Hapsburg palaces and a whole lot more. Between the two Vienna has a lot more to offer. Just to muddy the water, Salburg is also a wonderful option in Austria with a great castle, wonderful music festivals, Mozart's birthplace, and the setting of the Sound of Music.

I second Salzburg. It's utterly charming, and 2-3 days is perfect.

In comparison to Vienna, Innsbruck is a rather small town. There are several points of interest as the Golden Roof, the Dome and the small streets in the old town. However, the charm of Innsbruck apart from the old town are its surroundings - the mountains.

As you are staying in Interlaken, you will have no lack of majestic mountains so that Innsbruck might bring nothing new to you in that respect. Perhaps you will even be a little disappointed.

Vienna, on the other hand, has been the capital of a huge empire for a long time. Therefor you can expect a lot of imperial architecture, theatres, museums. Not to mention the wide range of cafés and restaurants...

So, my point is, Innsbruck and Vienna are hard to compare. I would prefer Vienna as a kind of contrast / addition to Interlaken.

Instead of going by train which takes several hours, have you considered going by plane from Zurich to Vienna? If you book in advance, you may find return tickets for € 180 on Austrian Airlines or even less on Air Berlin.

the train trip from Interlaken to Vienna is a long ride, something like 12 hours.

Salzburg is about 9 hours.

Munich is about 8.

I have been to Innsbruck 3 times, and I see very little reason to go there again.

Luzern is more interesting.

Why not Luzern or even Lugano--why so far?

This is one instance where I would not recommend venturing into Austria for just a couple of days. I hate to advise such a thing because I love Austria.
The nearest places would be the Voralberg/Bregenz area and Innsbruck.
Since the Alps you will see in Switzerland are spectacular, it would be redundant to venture into Austria unless you were headed for the cultural centers (ie Salzburg and Vienna). And for just a couple of days, it would not be worth it. See more of Switzerland, instead.
There are several unforgettably scenic trains such as Glacier Express, Berner Oberland and Panoramic Express. Stay in Berne, Lucerne or Montreux for a couple of nights, instead. All of these cities are quite charming.

Hello Aimoosh
I have a couple of questions: When do you plan to go? How long are you going to be in Switzerland? I think I might advise differently if I knew that. I just returned last Saturday from 8 days in Lucerne, Innsbruck, Salzburg, and Vienna. As others have posted, I would not try to train from Interlaken to Vienna (or Salzburg either for that matter). For only two days I would opt for Lucerne and do the town, surrounding area and especially Mt. Pilatus.
If you really want to go to Austria, consider flying. SwissAir has (or had) some really good deals. As other posters have said, Switzerland will spoil you for scenic mountains, etc. and Austria may be a little disappointing in that regard. If, however, you want museums, Mozart, concerts, and general incredible beauty and charm, consider Salzburg and Vienna -- skip Innsbruck. These are just my opinions, based on a rather limited (although very recent) experience. I hope I haven't muddied the water too much. Good Luck.

Lucky you!! Switzerland and Austria are two of the most majical countries on earth!! I guess my suggestion depends on your preference.
If you decide on Innsbruck there is a spa called the Interalpen. It is a bit pricey but for your honeymoon you will be treated like royalty! I was greeted with long stem roses when I arrived and it wasn't my honeymoon! You can literally have a massage while looking out over the snow covered alps - a view hardly worth missing...or you can sit in a hot tub with the same view. I was there for two days, never stepped outside and was thoroughly entertained within the spa.

If you're up for more adventure, I would have to say that Salzburg is great! It's like stepping off of the page of a fairy tale. A very charming city indeed! The people are wonderful and so friendly. A chamber music concert in Meribel (sp?)Gardens is well worth it!

Vienna is great too... be sure to go to the wine gardens outside of Vienna if you enjoy wine. I felt like a true Hapsburg after leaving Vienna.

Have a wonderful honeymoon!! No doubt that you will in Austria and Switerland!
