> your passport WILL BE collected by the attendant when you board and it won;t be given back until the next morning.

You can ask the conductor not to collect your passport, at least if you are traveling in a single compartment - you will be awakened twice in the middle of the night and arrive at your destination half-dead, but itīs your decision.

Our passports were collected removed from our sight for a period of one hour while passport control in Vyborg, Russia examined our visas. This was on a train from Helsinki to St. Petersburg. Uneasy time, yes. Could I kick up a stick about it, not if I wanted to get in the country.

Before I left Canada I had to relinquish my passport to the Russian Embassy for a period of three weeks to get the visa - it came back safe and sound.

When flying I've always been asked to put passport, boarding pass and other items in the bin. I just put those under my coat or sweater before sending them through the machine - for safe keeping.

I've flown out of CDG quite a few times, including most recently last month, and have never been made to leave my passport in a tray. I always carry it in my hand along with my boarding pass. I don't even understand why any agent would do that, what's the point? It can't put off the security alarms.

That's ridiculous! I was at CDG in March and don't remember this problem. I say keep your passport on you. So what if they want to search through your bag? Five minutes of hassle at security versus the risk of losing your passport -- easy choice for me.

I returned from CDG three days ago and was not required to place my passport and boarding pass in the security bin, nor was it placed directly there by any security agent. We have found that interpretations of security rules change often, and we are at the mercy of the powers that be. What can we do but "roll with it" and try to be as vigilant as possible, particularly when our valuables are out of our hands?

StCirq's story about her daughter is pretty scary. It's certainly a reminder for travellers to be more watchful.
