I am getting ready to do mine, as well. I was told it would take six weeks, so my guess would be six weeks or less since I'm sure they tell you the longest amount of time it will take.

In addition, all new passports as of March will now have hologram type photos, so the new change may slow the process down a bit.

I assume all responses here so far refer to US passports. As Peter mentioned, you did not specify what country you are in--One of the wonderful features of the Fodor's board is that its reach is global. Especially on the non-US boards, I assume many of the respondents are from Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, Latin American--would you have it any other way?
Enjoy your trip, Beth.

I took my passport in to the passport office with my marriage certificate and they made the change on the spot. Has this changed? All that was done was that a note was made on the back page of my passport. I always put a post-it note sticking out of my passport on that page so that any immigration clerk or airline check-in person will not be confused by my maiden name at the front of the passport not matching the name on the airline tickets or other documents.

Burta might be right for a US passport. I was referring to name change by mail. Since I presently live overseas, this is my only choice.

Beth, if it's a US passport, and you have a passport office near you, then the "in person" method would probably be your quickest route...providing you have the time.

Otherwise, I've been told that renwal or changes by mail take up to six weeks.
