Maybe it is just a kiosk problem. That would sure answer the question.

I just remembered I flew about 5 years ago on a ticket my daughter had purchased for me with no problems. Had forgotten about that. But that was before 9/11.

This is why I had a discussion with Northwest. My passport was renewed. In past it showed my first name, middle name, maiden name and married name.

All my passports have been like that.

This new renewal shows my first name, middle name and last name.

My credit cards, frquent flyer card, drivers license etc. (everything) shows my first name, initial of my maiden name and my married name.

I first called Northwest and was given a supervisor to talk to. She seemed very knowledgable. She said that my passport had to match the name on the tickets (no surprise there), my frequent flyer card (no surprise there).
I asked if I could just have the ticket issued the same as on the passport and could they change my frequent flyer account to match my passport name. She said the problem was that I would than have to use a credit card that showed the same name as my passport.

I called the passport office and was given the same info. Also was given info as to how to get my passport corrected (which I still have not done).

So that is all I know. And of course KSWL has shared her experiences. Must get that passport sent in ASAP for name correction, oh sigh!

I was so curious about this credit card - ticket - name thing that I posted question on "Airline" board - several replies there for anyone who is not totally crazed by this thread already.

Hi gail, I went to your thread on the Airlines Board.

Sunnyboy stated that checking in at a kisok, ticket holder needs a credit card issued in the same name as on the ticket.

That is what Northwest told me. As I explained early, the passport office did not renew my passport correctly. I do not have a credit card under the same name as the name the passport office renewed my name in. So in my situation I do have a problem so to speak. But will not once I get my passport sent in for a name correction. And that I must do ASAP.

Take care.

Yes a credit card is one type of identification that can be used to locate your reservation when checking in at a kiosk. However, it is not the ONLY method. A ff card or manually keying in your record locator will also work. Please see this thread on the Northwest board at flyertalk.com:

I honestly don't think you'll have a problem as long as the names on your ticket and passport match. However, if you have time, you can certainly get your maiden name added back to your passport.

Patty, this is my last post on this subject. Do not know why I am even bothering to respond. Northwest said passport, ticket and frequent flyer names HAVE to be the same.

End of subject. Do not mean to sound rude but have found that threads are started and than endless debates about the answer.

I have travled for decades. Am not some young person starting out on my first international trip (although that would be wonderful if I were).

Fodors posters often have good travel adivse. But when it comes to airline and government requirements I will follow their advice.

LoveItaly,
I wasn't trying to start a debate and don't want to get into a 'who has traveled more extensively' contest. I was simply trying to provide some additional information which may be helpful to others as well. I don't even know what I said to upset you. Anyway, hope you have a wonderful trip wherever you're going!

Update: Got return tickets for $343.30 from JFK and hotel is arranged. Now I am jealous and wishing I had gotten 4 tickets so my husband & I could go, and we could get an apartment! Probably could do this for not much more. Next time! (This is a wedding gift, so we don't want to intrude!)
