My daughter just took the overnight train from Paris to Termini. I would fly personally.

Plane, train or automobile? I guess that's my first question.

A train will take somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 hours I'd guess...that makes for a nice night train ride, but you could also fly and get there much quicker.

Check out europebyair.com and see if their $99 specials will fly you from Paris to Rome.

As for driving, I wouldn't bother, but that's just me. I like every opportunity to meet other people, so trains are my favorite mode of travel.

We took the night train from Paris to Venice (12 hours) and had a LOVELY time, going in 2nd class with the locals. We met a school group whose teacher was taking them to Genoa for a field trip, and the high school kids had never been around Americans, so they were absolutely enthralled with us -- trying out their English and trying to teach us French. One of our most unforgettable experiences, even if we didn't get much sleep that night.

Hi singer, when are you planning on going from Paris to Rome? I ask because I want to make you aware there are some scheduled strikes in Italy in June. June 6 and June 26 the pilots are striking (4 hours each day).
The Air Traffic Controllers are striking on June 8. So don't make plane reservations for those days or the day after. Best wishes, enjoy your trip.

Depends on time and budget.
If you take a night train, you're saving the cost of hotel room, AND adding hours of time that can be spent in non-transport related activities. Why do i say this?
When i checked transfers, it was a hassle--metro, then long bus ride, to get from the part of Paris we stay at, to Beauvais Airport. It added up to a busy half-day production from Paris to Rome leaving either VERY early from the Left Bank or staying overnight nr Beauvais in order to get to flight to Rome Ciampino, then more transport into Rome. It just seemed more relaxing to get to the station in Paris, have dinner, watch the sunset from the train, sleep, wake as we pass through Italy, arrive at 10 a.m. into Termini, and walk to our nearby first two nights' hotel.

I don't mean you literally see the sun set, but the colors of the evening sky. A friend took this trip and loved it. You pass through Switrzerland as well, but it's in the middle of the night and too dark to see anything.
