“Located in eastern France, the Alsace Wine Route spans 170 km, starting near Strasbourg in the north and ending just south of Colmar”
The article mentions that there are many villages worth visiting on this road, such as RIQUEWIHR, EGUISHEIM, and OBERNAI.
Is this the same route or are you talking about something else? How do I take this route if I wanna use google maps?

https://www.visit.alsace/en/the-alsace-wine-route/ has downloadable files, but I find look out the window and read the signs works well too.
"near" is relative.
I too would stay in a village, I love Eguisheim after the tourists have gone, but it is up to you. Colmar is just a bigger place with larger hotels and it depends if you want more international hotel type or more local type. You can also book into a few very nice hotels between the villages. You need to give us an idea of what you want from your hotel and prices that make sense to you. So with a pool for E200 a night is different to no-pool and E100.

Irice - we stayed in Amboise once for a few nights and it did indeed make a very good base for touring the area. We have also stayed in Saumur which we also liked a lot. Both have sights to see in the town, as well as in the surrounding area, so you don't need to drive all the time, and plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants to make the evenings interesting.
