Paris to La Rochelle/Sarlat to Paris
Greetings,
We are planning on driving to La Rochelle from Paris. Any recommendations for a nice overnight in a picturesque town? Is Poitiers suitable?
Eventually we will be in Sarlat and will be returning to Paris. Any recommended one night stays would be appreciated. We've done Amboise and surrounding areas and enjoyed that town on other trips. Thank you.

Poitiers, if you concentrate on the old city quarter, is well worth a visit. The sprawl on the outskirts is pretty daunting, though. On the other hand, by the time you get to Poitiers you're almost to La Rochelle. You might want to stop nearer to Chatelleraut or Chaivigny, or take a more westerly route and stop in Angers.
On the way back, to vary the route, you might consider going by way of Chateauroux and Auxerre.
If you can manage a stop at Oradour-sur-Glane in either direction, it would be worth a detour.

Bourges might be a nice stop back to Paris. The cathedral is interesting and it has a nice old town. You might want to visit the Palis Jacques Coeur. Between Bourges and Paris you could stop in Sully and visit the chateau which has its original inverted ship roof support structure.

I forgot a going south suggestion. We stayed in Langeais on our way south. The chateau is very nice, of an earlier vintage than most well-known Loire chateaux. The town is not large. We stayed at a hotel called either Anne de Bretagne or la Duchesse Anne. Demi-pension was 98 euro for two, and it's pleasant dining in the garden if the weather is nice.

Thank you all. Decided to travel further westerly and stop overnight at Angers, then continue on to La Rochelle - St. Emilion - Sarlat. On the way back to Paris, we'll stop at Bourges overnight.Again, thanks!
