You wouldn't call it Brussel because there are several Brussels that make up Brussels. Even the Thomas Cook Timetable, which UNFAILINGLY uses local terms like 'Brugge' because that's what the station name will be called i guess uses 'Brussels' and not 'Brussel', though this is the Flemish name. And it depends on what 'English' you're using - in American English, the defact English used in the world, we'd rarely say Rheims but Reims and not Ghent but Gent. For example my American dictionary says 'Reims' then has (Rheims, English) so it depends what kind of English you're talking about. Reminder. Brugge i grant you though even in American English should be Bruges.

Because once you are IN Brugge most things says Brugge. Because if you are driving to the town, ALL the road signage will say Brugge. Because the web site for the city is www.brugge.be. Because the train announcements will be for Brugge, not Bruges. Because it's a gentle reminder that in Brugge, people do not speak French.

Gee, FLUK, the stick perennially up your bum must be more uncomfortable than usual today.
