Paris: Sofitel, Grand Hyatt or Millenium?
Hello - I am taking my 65 y/o mom to Paris (her first visit) this November and am choosing between the following hotels: Sofitel Rive Gauche, Millenium Opera and the Grand Hyatt. Any input into which one is the best choice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

grbobby, Are you asking about the Park Hyatt? There isn't a Grand Hyatt in Paris, but there is a Park Hyatt Paris Vendome, and also the Hyatt Regency Paris Madeleine. There's another at the airport, also a Hyatt Regency, which I doubt you are asking about.
I stayed at the Madeleine Hyatt this past Christmas, if that's the one you meant. It's a fabulous hotel in a terrific location. My husband works for Hyatt (domestic--Hyatt International is a separate company) so I've seen the inside of a lot of Hyatt hotels, and this was unlike any I've ever experienced. It is very European, very very chic. If it were in this country it would be considered a Grand at the very least, but more likely a Park.
I didn't see the inside of the Park Hyatt, so before I go on and on about the wonders of the Madeleine, let me know which one you are interested in!

I stayed at the Sofitel Forum Rive Gauche in 1999..my first trip to Paris and that trip was with a tour group. It seems like a lot of groups use this hotel and also a lot of airline people were there. I didn't know a thing about Paris and had no idea where we were. I will say it's a very nice hotel, very clean, nice size room and bathroom, hair dryer etc., lots of cafe's etc. close by. The metro is also very close so you can get around easily. I stayed a block or so from the Millenium my last trip. I really liked the area..it is the one on Blvd. Haussmann you are asking about? Guess I should have asked that first. Lots of places to eat, close to one of the Passages...can't remember the name of it but great little shops and a bakery and book store...a few blocks from the Opera and the Madeleine, and also Bouchera, Gallerie Lafayette, and Printemps. Hmmm, not that familiar with Paris...only been twice but I know where the stores are!!!!! LOL I am NOT a Paris expert so I know there are pros and cons about this area...I thought it was great..oh yea...the metro was convenient also. Don't know anything about the Hyatt.

I don't know anything about the hotels, but I know some people think the Sofitel is not in a good area for first time tourists. (I mean I know some people who stayed there and didn't like it for that reason). There's nothing "wrong" with it, but kind of no man's land to a lot of people. I'd choose from the other two.

The Park Hyatt has a wonderful location and I hear it's even more upscale than the Madeleine Hyatt, which was a very impressive hotel--akin to any Park Hyatt in the states. Wish we'd had time to see the Park, but sorry, can't help you further there.
