Paris open markets -- please help!
Can anyone recommend a good street market in Paris? I will be there next Friday - Sunday, and would love to experience one. I have read about several; Rue Cler, Rue Mouffetard, Rue de Levis, but I cannot decide. We are staying in the 8th arr. Thank you!!

Rue Cler is not a street market - it's just a funky street with a lot of merchants whose stuff spills over into the street area. Rue Mouffetard is a great market - if you like skinned goatheads you'll be in heaven. Rue de Levis I'm sorry I haven't heard of. I like the market in rue de Buci - it's got people from all over France at it, including a guy from the Périgord who sells saucisse d'âne - an acquired taste for sure. It's open every day, which is a plus.

Rue de Levis is adorable but not really a street market. It is a market street which has stores which spill out onto the pavement. The most charming market street is rue Mouffetard (but there are a lot of tourists) Same with rue de Buci. If you want an open market, try the one on Saturday mornings at place de Breteuil (metro Sevres Lecourbe) It has a fantastic view of the Eiffel Tower as well. Place d'Aligre is also a fun and colorful market (metro Ledru Rollin) Have fun.

None of those are street markets. They are just shopping streets, with some small storefronts that have open fronts to the street during certain hours. You could probably put rue Lepic into that list, also. Given your location, I'd go to Levis or Lepic if that's what you want (to see food).
There is a street market on Wed. and Saturday mornings on bd Edgar Quinet, and on Wed and Sunday mornings at place Maubert, and an organic market Sunday mornings at the beginning of bd Raspail (near Rennes metro). They've started an arts/crafts market Sunday morning on bd Quinet from what I've heard, but I haven't been to it. The other markets are food markets, in case you didn't know that.

The art market on Sundays at Ed.Quinet is a mix of paintings, pottery, jewelry, hand dyed scarves, etc. I have been there twice now to visit Maurice Tan, a young watercolorist from Singapore. http://www.warmgray.com
He does wonderful architectural paintings. It is a great stop for a few hours. On Weds. and Saturdays, it is a mix of food and "stuff" (purses, suitcases, etc.).

The pl. Monge market is our favorite--on Sunday mornings (other days also). Here is a listing of all the markets by arrondisement. There is also an excellent one on Av. Richard Lenoir near Bastille.
