Paris Museums free under age 25?

According to the Rick Steves website, "Starting April 4, 2009, admission to France's national museums and monuments is free for anyone under 25 years old." Does anyone have any idea as to where I could obtain a list of which museums and monuments that would include? That would really help us in budget planning and knowing whether we still need to purchase museum passes for 10 students. I'm assuming everything on the museum pass list is not a national museum or monument?

Why would you assume that when you can consult the museum pass website?

I don't see anything on the Rick Steves site about the museums being free to under 25s. Do you have the link on that site? I believe the national museums are free to 18 and under. I just checked a couple of the museums and see nothing about 25 year olds.

The Louvre is free to under 26s on Friday evenings.

In looking further I see the Orsay is free for 18 to 25 YOs from EU countries. Non EU students get a reduction from 8 Euro to 5.5 Euro.

You need to decide what museums you want to see and if it's worth while to get a 2 (32Euro) or 4 day pass (48 Euro) for 10 students.

How old are your students?

I'm not sure the ones covered are coincident with national museums and monuments. Maybe it is, I might be wrong on that. I don't know how France is going to get by financially, but I know they hope to make it up in gift shop sales.

Anyway, this is their website (the national museums/monuments of France)
http://www.rmn.fr/

You can go into the Paris section and see what is listed, but it is most of the main ones you'll want to see. I thought it was actually under 26, not under 25, that's the usual age they use for reduced fares or entry. Rick Steves often gets that kind of thing wrong.

Okay, I found the notice on the Ministre of Culture's website and it is under age 26. There is a video, also.
http://www.culture.gouv.fr/

If you go into that further, it has links you can click and it will give you a list of ones included. In Paris:

Palenque - you are correct. The link Christina gives states that the museums are free for "European young people of less than 26 years old."

That is the same info I saw on the Orsay Museum site which I stated above.

I believe that under 18 year olds can get in free.

The same has been true of senior rates at many museums in Europe - the U.S. is not a signee of some treaty covering these so Americans were on the list of countries often posted where senior rates were not granted.

And the CIEE International Student Identity Card is also not honored IME at French museums - and in many other countries.

Thanks for all the replies. I heard somewhere else after I posted this that the under 26 only applies to EU students (unfortunately!). Can anyone else verify this? Christina, your link goes to a site that seems to indicate that this is only for European youth.

And I was just looking at the Versailles and other museum sites last night, and they said "under 26, EU citizens."

I think it is pretty clear that it applies only to EU "youths". The sentence from the Ministry of Culture website is "Le 1er avril, Christine Albanel présente la nouvelle mesure qui assure l'accès gratuit aux musées et monuments nationaux pour les jeunes de la communauté européennes âgés de moins de 26 ans." and the quotation from the Minster of Culture herself on making the public announcement of the new policy is "de cette mesure qui permettra à tous les jeunes de la Communauté européenne d’accéder gratuitement à notre patrimoine culturel et artistique." So good for your group if you are European. Not so good if you are not.

yes, that's what it says, it is only for youths of the European Community. I remember reading that a year or so ago when Sarkozy first announced it, at least they talked about that, so I was surprised that it would apply to everyone. Although I guess it does in London, doesn't it? I wonder if Rick Steves notes that.

There were already some where they tried this out in 2008, but it wasn't all of them. I think there were about 8 in Paris, can't recall, and it was free to them on certain nights or something. That was the test case for doing it for all of them.

Under EU law, you cannot discriminate against other EU citizens by just offering free admission to French youths only. So the choice is they either open it to all youths of any nationality or restrict it to EU youths. I suppose since Sarkozy's original intention was to give French young people fee access to great national treasures, restricting it to EU citizens still meets the objective without costing too much in lost revenue.
