It is supposed to open this May. Finally. I got this from the monthly PARIS NOTES newsletter I receive.
They’ve announced tentative dates before for the reopening, only to rescind them, but I think this one may, at last, be right. Let’s hope.

I've been waiting for this museum to reopen since my first trip to Paris in 1999. Wouldn't you know it, I'll be in Paris the last two weeks of April! I guess I'll finally see it next year.

Hooray, we will be in Paris in October. Looking forward to visiting, I presume it will be included on the museum pass?

They have a website, that is probably the best source to recheck for information.

I think it will be on the museum card because it was before, as I recall. Besides, it's a publicly-owned, not private museum, and they are usually on the card.

I'm heading to Paris in 2 days and really wanted to go to musee national de l'orangerie. So, what's the opening date?

Musee de L'Orangerie is scheduled to reopen in early May, but I wouldn't count on it.

Once it opens, I doubt it will be possible to get in without a museum pass, and even then I would expect a very long line for several months or longer.

In addition, one of the sites I read indicated that half of each day would be for group admittance only (opening to 12:30) and individuals only would be allowed 12:30 to closing. Not sure what that accomplishes, but...see Parisinfo.com for more on that.

Fingers crossed, I'm going in May. This will be my 5th trip there with it closed if it doesn't open!

Update...apparently the 2nd May reopening is more likely. I was just reading May's Budget Travel magazine and this article confirms the reopening (also has a virtual map of the museum)

The other day I was looking at an old journal of mine and saw this entry for Paris, June 12, 1999:

"Walked to l'Orangerie Museum for the Monet waterlilies exhibit, but the line was miles long and seemed not to be moving. We also found out our museum passes weren't good there. We decided it was one thing to do next trip."

OK, is that when it closed -- soon after, because we've been by it every trip since? Any way to book tomorrow for a visit in July?

I was there in 1997 and I think it closed a year or so later.

You will love the Water Lillies -the most suprising thing is how big the paintings are!

I think it closed sometime in 2000. I'm surprised your pass wasn't good as I have a copy of an old Museum Pass booklet from around that year, and it includes the Musee National de l'Orangerie des Tuileries on it. The copyright on this booklet is Jan 2000 (it is listed on the booklet but then says closed until 2002).

As I recall, this was a special exhibit of more than the usual waterlily paintings. I think that's why the pass was not inclusive and why the crowds were so amazingly long.

I think one of our party went to the front of the line seeing if there was a special entrance for pass holders and that's when we found out the pass wouldn't get us in for this exhibit.

Yes, I just did some googling and saw that it closed in 2000. I also saw that the big holdup was a discovery in 2003 of some ruins of an ancient Paris wall under the museum. I also saw an "official" website saying that it would definitely reopen in late 2005 --- OK, how official was that?

oh, yes, well people who buy museum passes always have to understand they probably don't cover special exhibits.

Yes I have, and I've never had a contractor so foolish as to use the phrase "definitely be done. . ."

Gee, I hope you don't think I was complaining -- just commenting that I saw that "definite" opening that has passed. And of course we weren't upset that the pass didn't cover the special exhibit -- that wasn't my point.

This came up once before and when I googled it this is what I got:

"It remains to be seen whether the Musée de l'Orangerie will re-open before the end of this decade, but it will probably be worth the wait."

is this the same one everyone here is talking about or are there two of them????
