Paris in late January: should I take my long wool coat? Or will a short winter jacket do?

If it's raining and cold, I wear my long wool coat and carry an umbrella --my coat has never become drenched and looks great.
The only place I'll walk around in the rain with a hood cinched around my head is at the barn or when I'm walking the dog. Hoods that don't cinch around your head are generally useless in the rain since a sudden breeze whips them back.
But other people I know wear parka type jackets most everywhere and are fine with it. I think it looks too casual and I'm not thrilled about how I look with a hood cinched tightly around my face, but that's a personal thing. Whatever you feel comfortable with.
I'll add that I folded and packed my long wool coat into a 22" roller -- it was a bit wrinkled at the bottom but those came out after hanging the coat up. Your trip sounds fabulous, I'm sure you'll have an incredible time.

I don't try to pack my coat, I wear it or carry it on the plane. Any wrinkles hang out and I also take a lint roller, for all my black clothes. The only day I didn't wear that coat was when we went out to Versailles because the day started out so nice. By the time we were leaving and walking back to the train station, the sun was setting and I was absolutely freezing!!!!! I was just miserable. Also, be sure to take gloves. If it's a cold and windy day, they gloves will make a big difference in your comfort level, as will a scarf.

You're going to think this is ridiculous but I packed my wool coat... because I brought my shearling with me on the plane.
I know this sounds crazy for such a short trip, but I was freezing last year in the wool coat and wished I had brought a warmer one.

Moolyn, I think I will take my short jacket and go shopping for a trench coat, with zip ou lining, in Paris...
The apartment I am renting is close to Rue Alesia, which is supposed to have a lot of budget stores, I am told.
Fishee, last year I packed my short jacket and carried my long coat in the plane...
