It was long ago that I asked for advice on the these hotels. I'm finally writting to let you know my thoughts. (I came home from Paris to a family medical emergency and haven't had time to write before now.)
We stayed at Hotel Minerve and were very pleased. Our room was small, as everyone writes about, but it was charming, clean and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was clean, marble and like others have written - no shower curtain. But, you get used to it. We used the nice lobby to meet with friends.
Now, with many months perspective I can see that all of my worrying prior to our trip was not necessary.
Our stay was just great and I recommend the Hotel Minerve - it was confortable, in a very convenient location and made for a nice home base.
To all who go - Enjoy!

We had 2 rooms to choose from. The room with the view was TINY, while the room in the back was positively spacious by Paris standards. We took the space and never regretted it. A detailed description will be in my Paris trip report, if I ever get it done...

Yes, we did go to Kayser bakery, Nikki. It was as wonderful as you said! That was our morning breakfast - absolutely wonderful.
With the money we saved by not staying at the more expensive hotel, we did do the day trip to Brugge. Worth every penny. Even though there was a slight rain, we loved it all - starting with the train ride from Paris, the canal ride, the walks through winding streets, the architecture, and of course the chocolate.

Stayed at the Hotel Henri IV Rive Gauche in July, 2003. It's well-situated in the 5th arr near Notre Dame, the Seine, Ile St Louis, St Germain. Restaurants abound in the area. Rue St Jacques while not a wide boulevard is a busy street. Our room (#103) was well-appointed and comfortable. We requested a quiet room that faced an inner courtyard. Air conditioning was essential in July. English-speaking staff at the front desk were pleasant & helpful.
That said, we did not decide to return to the 5th arr last summer because we found the area to be very busy and teaming with tourists. IMHO, I'd stay away from the restaurants along Rue St-Severin. Instead, we stayed in the 6th at the Hotel Millesime. We loved this area and would return again.
Good luck!
