ok all you seasoned paris travelers out there..need some help/suggestions/recommendations for a hotel in paris that is either near rolland garros or in the heart of paris itself with easy access to the metro to get to rolland garros.
also..for those that have attended the french open....i was wondering about the advantages of so-called category 1 seating(lower level) versus category 2(upper level)seating. Obviously, the lower seats are more expensive yet at the same time if one can get a nice view from the upper seats,I would love to know about that.
Lastly, i would like to take a Seine river cruise...can you recommend or have suggestions for such? thanx in advance fellow travelers....hugz

I stayed at the Hotel de La Boudonnais near Ecole Militaire metro stop for ten nights in May 2005 and went to Roland Garros three days. this hotel is in the city center, but pretty good for getting to Roland Garros by metro as it was only like six stops away. Keep in mind on the way back from
Roland Garros that the trains at the PorteDeAuteil metro station run only in one direction (west), and it's probably not the direction you want so you will have to take an extra train on the way back. You should look for hotels you want to stay at and then check the metro map to see how many stops and train changes they need to get to Roland Garros.

For the seating, tennis stadiums are pretty small so there are no bad seats, but if you're only gonna be there once I'd try to get the best seats. The lower seats do sell out first.

As far as tournament information goes, the french open is not nearly as well organized as Wimbledon. People jump the queues, the food was absolutely terrible (take your own sandwiches in!!), and there are massive crowds. I was trying to cross the main square in the tennis center and ended up going in the direction the crowd shoved me in.

Nevertheless it's a great experience for tennis fans

There are several hotels in the Auteuil area, although most of them are in the 2* category. What is your budget? There is also the Auteuil Tour Eiffel hotel near the Mirabeau metro stop (sort of the edge of Auteuil), which is a comfortable 3 star hotel with good service, but it's not brimming with character. Rooms are fairly standard and the street rooms overlook a radiology clinic. Still, it's pleasant enough.
There is almost a more upscale serviced apartment/hotel on rue George Sand, which would be an easy walk from Roland Garros. www.hotelhome.fr
Auteuil is an upscale residential neighborhood with some nice restaurants, shops, cafes, and a terrific street market.
