Some of you romanticize too much. Of course there are horribly dressed Italians. I have seen Italians look as though they crawled out of a garbage bin. And many of the "nonas" I have seen look like bulldogs in black sacks.

IOC, how true!! Especially in the small towns where a navy blue a-line skirt and a navy cardigan buttoned once in the middle is the fashion statement of most any woman over 50.

As anywhere it is the big cities that have more fashion conscious people.

I am a female so do not take this the wrong way but just tell her what's "in" for womem is looking like a lady and feeling like a lady. Rather than dress for complete comfort and all day touring she should dress to make you and herself proud. Rather than what to wear it is what not to wear...leave the sneakers and sweatsuites at home. A spritz of perfume and a scarf are always a la mode in France.

Mini skirt, see through top, no underwear, very high heels ?

She won't look out of place.

Parisian women, especially women "of some maturity" tend to wear designer scarfs when dining or attending functions. These clorful items soften the "black on black" outfits that we often see. Plus, you have an excellent excuse for a shopping trip or two, or three....whatever.

I agree about the scarf. I posted on the "latest fashion in Italy" thread that I'd purchased a small but beautifully designed Pucci scarf at the boutique in Venice and it worked beautifully spiffing up the black outfits with some color/style. Italian and French ladies both seem to wear scarfs more than Americans (and they do wear them with great style).

Have you seen Meryl Streep in the Devil Wears Prada? I believe she's late 50's.
And would make the perfect Parisienne.
