I obviously agree that 1* is not the Ritz and the TA reviews won't be good.

I haven't checked Tiquetonne's reviews recently, but in the past they were pretty positive. I guess that's why it's always been booked so solidly!

This one is more expensive than you want (83 Euros for a superior double), and it's further north than you want, but as you know, I stayed in this area twice, and it's fine. It also looks like a nice 3* hotel:

I haven't reviewed all the choices suggested, but I've just checked Venere, Boooking.com, Orbitz, hotelscombined.com and hrs.de.

First -- a personal preference. Booking.com has a nice interface, and so does Venere. If you know where you want to stay, you can isolate by area and sort by price, which is what I do if I know I don't want to spend more than $x.

It's clear Hotel de la Vallee is easy to book, but I'm hesitant especially about the bit with the disappearing toilet paper on TripAdvisor.

Argonautes is very prompt with e-mails. I can offer that about them if anyone is thinking of booking with them.

I think that I'll go with Louvre Richelieu. The TA reviews suggest this hotel is shady, but other reviews look OK. For two nights I think I can take a chance, plus I'll be out most of the time.

The problem I have is that the rate of RatesToGo seems too low. Supposedly there's an ensuite bathroom, but I'm doubting the description. What if I show up and they make me share a bathroom? Do I write RTG to complain?

I think if you showed up and Louvre Richelieu would only give you a hotel with a shared bathroom, you could do a credit card dispute if appealing to RatesToGo didn't work. I guess it's a general problem of whether you can trust the hotel or not, and whether being stuck with a shared bathroom is something you are willing to take a small risk for.

If you go ahead with RTG, I would contact the hotel and say that you are looking forward to staying there, that you have booked a room with an ensuite bathroom, and are planning to arrive by (for example) 5 PM.

I don't think I can book until tomorrow or Thursday with all the complications that have cropped up in the meantime.

Decent budget hotel is the Michelet Odeon in the 6th, have stayed there and it is absolutely fine and in a good area. It is 2 star.

I've just booked a single for Louvre Richelieu for 45 euros a night through RatesToGo.

Let's see how bad this is.

On my confirmation page, I don't see that there's an ensuite bathroom, but I've printed the description from another RTG webpage to bring with me.

Let's hope I survive this hotel.

My room at Richelieiu had a bathroom (with a door) with shower. Cost about 90 euro, as I recall. 45 euro's a great price, but may be a shared bath (or none at all).

Ensuite seems a very highclass adjective for Richelieu, but whatever.
Out the front door, turn right, again at corner, and down a block on the right (toward the Louvre) is a very nice boulangerie.

It worked out well. For 45 euros -- or maybe 50 -- I forget exactly, as there's a booking fee on RTG, I can't complain really except for the tired and drab carpeting and bed spread. But the sheets and bathroom (yes, there was one!) were clean. Reception was friendly and spoke english.

Reception closed at 12 am and reopened at 6 am, though when I left at 5:30 am, the night clerk was there already. I believe that they advertise that they close between 1 and 3 pm, so it's something to remember (I didn't test it out myself).

They even gave me a room with a double bed.

For 50 euros I'd stay there again. I'd have to do more research if it's 100 euros, say.

Shortly after I got there, a sign went up that the hotel was sold out completely.

There are a lot of Japanese noodle shops on r. Ste-Anne/r. Therese. I ate in one, where my mom and I ate a few years ago where we stayed at Hotel Therese. I also tried the Cambodian restaurant where we'd walked by a couple of times, and it was fine.

I just checked my credit card bill. The final cost was $23.09 + $95.69 = $118.78 for two nights.

It's just about $5 more than my hotel for a single night in Jerusalem.
