I count at least four times in which you've written the same thing -- once in italics and once in bold.

While this isn't directed at me (as I never said I was called a coward), I do want to say that most people who read this forum can read just fine. It's not necessary to repeat the same thing >= four times.

However, sometimes it's necessary to tell people that it's possible to find a double in central Paris with a private bathroom at 50 euros at least four times, as those people may still not get it.

Let's try to be more civil on this forum. It's good for everyone.

Hotel Sainte-Marie. Travelnut posted the address. I stayed there, it's in the 2nd, a block away from the Bonne Nouvelle metro stop. I paid 54euro for a double (it was Jan.). My friends said I was crazy and that you can't stay at a decent place for that price in that location. It's a safe clean place to sleep. The staff was friendly (not 24h), the location was great, it is a walk-up, there are only 3 channels on the tv (which we didn;t care), you'll need to provide your own soap but most importantly it's clean.

When someone unjustly accuses me of libel, I shift into a "relentless" mode, and only a retraction and an apology will make me stop. So you can save your breath.

(By the way: I find the irony of

"...those people may still not get it. Let's try to be more civil..."

to be exquisite.)

So do I, actually.

I am surprised that there're people as unsavory as I am. I've always thought that New Yorkers are the worst. But evidently not.

By the way, did I misremember? Didn't you say that you were swearing off this forum at one point, Robespierre? What brought you back?

Fodor's should just delete this thread. It's served its purpose.

Contrary to what Robespierre says, you do not need to eliminate the 1st to the 8th arrondissements, as they are the most central. In fact, several posters, including me, have already given you hotels that fit your budget of $60 a night.

But what you do have to be aware of is that these hotels may lack some of the following:

1. 24h front-desk
2. private bathroom
3. breakfast
4. elevator
5. staff who speak excellent English

Hotel Tiquetonne, for example, doesn't have a 24h front desk, but that area is perfectly safe at night.

While your budget is tight and it's quite difficult to find hotels in central Paris for that budget, there're choices provided that you are willing to give up some amenities.

Yes, you may be able to find your target accommodation. But just be aware that you can easily do much better if you are willing to compromise on location. You get what you pay for, and a $60 room with bath in central Paris is probably worth just that.

Why are we still talking about this?

And the $60 hotel in Antony is worth the 19:01 train from St.-Michel? When tourists are out dining in Paris?

Thanks for quoting me. It's really not necessary. The rest of the forum can read what I said just fine, I'm sure.

You need to understand "easily" and "much better" are in the eye of the beholder.

Let's just leave this.

This really isn't relevant, but as long as you keep bringing it up - some of us retire to the hotel around sevenish to dress for the evening's activities downtown, such as a show at the Opéra or Comédie-Française, followed by a late supper.

As I said above, I get a four-star suite in Antony for 112€, which I certainly wouldn't be able to find downtown (with or without ensuite bath). If you know of one, kindly do me the service of identifying it.

going to bejing:

you may want to save any info worth keeping from this thread as a text file. it may just get deleted by the editors.

it's unfortunate that a jerk here and there completely hijacks a thread and makes it hostile for everyone.

if it makes you feel any better, i'm interested in the answers for my own purposes too so i saved it on my hard drive. the hard part is having to edit delete all the sniping & crap later.

Who keeps bringing this up?

And it's funny you put "private bathroom" in boldface -- yes, Tiquetonne has a private bathroom. The doubles are 50 euros. Yes, it's possible to get a central hotel with a private bathroom at 50 euros. We've told you so.

When do performances at Comedie Francaise start? If they start at 8, you may have to rush a bit if you're taking the 7:01 train back to Antony. I hope that you're a fast walker. As you know, my French is not good enough to go there. I stick to Theatre des Champs-Elysees. It's on the Right Bank. I doubt that the 7:01 train to Antony will help very much there. A few minutes here. A few minutes there. I'll miss the piano recital.

Yes I know that I left out a couple of accents.

Can we just end this discussion?

"Who keeps bringing this up?" You keep asking me questions.

I bolded private bathroom to emphasize the fact that your post had said it was one of the things that central hotels [within the budget] may lack.

Plays at the Comédie-Française start at 20h30.
Concerts at the Opéra usually at 20h. We've never been late.
I've never been to an opera in Paris, but I think it's a little earlier, maybe 19h or 19h30.

I don't know why this travel time to Antony seems to be such a big issue. As I have pointed out repeatedly, it takes a quarter-hour to get from St-Michel Notre-Dame to Champ de Mars-Tour Eiffel on the RER - the same time as to Antony. Does the travel time deter anyone from staying in the VII or VIII? I don't think so.

In fact, the central zone of Paris is about a half-hour wide and a half-hour high by Métro. This means that the average trip between any two randomly chosen points is 15 minutes or so (only rarely does the RER serve both points). So when you go back to your hotel, you will walk to a Métro station, ride to the stop nearest your hotel, and walk the rest of the way. Sometimes more than 15 minutes, sometimes less. Many people do this in the middle of the day to refresh and regroup. And so do we.

The discussion will end whenever you stop.

You know what? I'll stop out of respect for the forum. I've nothing else that's useful to add anyway. And it's a waste of my time.

I'll point out the original poster wanted a centrally located hotel with a specified budget. Several posters chimed in with their suggestions that all met the poster's requirements.

You're harping on Antony. Which to some extent is fine. But the insistence gets annoying after a while when (I don't think) this is what the poster is looking for and when this is apparently your pet topic of discussion: whether a tourist should stay in central Paris.

By the way, I'm not insisting that the poster stay at Hotel Tiquetonne (I don't get a cut or anything). I happen to like the hotel. But notice how I've presented my opinions. I pointed out some pros and cons of staying in central Paris at a budget of $60. While some hotels may lack a private bathroom, many have suggested hotels with private bathrooms (including Tiquetonne) at that price. There was no need for you to repeat my message that way and highlight "private bathroom." It added nothing to the discussion.

But look at how you're presenting Antony. Your insistence is measured at all. And a 16 to a 22-minute train ride becomes, conveniently, "quarter hour." You're putting forward the best possible arguments for Antony.

Why not do this? Start a new thread called "Virtues of Antony" (or whatever you want to call it). Put your thoughts there. Then when this comes up again, simply provide a link to that thread. You've provided threads on Paris bus tours before (which personally I find more interesting and useful than hotels in Antony). But this is a public forum, and we can all say what we want. However I think that this is a much better way and a more efficient use of everyone's time and people don't have to discuss this issue over and over and over and over again.

A long-winded discussion on Antony certainly doesn't interest me in a thread on a centrally located hotel in Paris at $60. And my feeling that it doesn't interest a whole lot of other people either. So it seems best to relegate that sort of discussion to a separate thread that can be linked when this comes up.

Sorry: "Your insistence is measured at all" should have read "Your insistence is not measured at all."

Here, I started a thread for you:

The title is neutral. We can talk about it there. But feel free to start another one if the title is not to your liking.

Tell you what: you compute the mean, median, and modal values for all the trains between St-Michel Notre Dame and Antony (don't forget to weight the weekday vs. weekend runs), then choose one for me to use from now on.

Hey Going to Beijing - are you still here?

I just found this hotel advice on another "womens" site - good location and the price is right for you.
>>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>

"A budget hotel in Paris...
When a hotel I booked in Paris turned out to be a dump, I found Hotel des Arts et Métiers at 4 rue Borda in the third arrondissement. It is located across the street from the Arts et Métiers museum as well as the metro stop. For about US$45.00 a night (in June) I got a lovely room, clean and bright with beautiful tile work on the floor and private bath, which had a nice shower and fluffy towel. There was TV with remote, large, comfy bed, and a very courteous, eager-to-please family reception. They take credit cards, too. Phone: 01.48.87.73.89. P.S. I suggest you skip breakfast, which is extra, and not very reasonable. You can do much better at a cafe in the neighbourhood.
