My understanding is there are no 5 star hotels in Paris. For some I am sure by <b>reputation</b> the George V is the "best." How many have actually stayed there is another thing entirely. I suspect some people who can afford the George V actually prefer the Meurice, the Lancaster, the Crillon, etc. and I suppose they also feel there are good reasons for that.

The place to stay is The Ritz of course - http://www.ritz.com. In particular the Vendome Suite.

The highest category in Paris is the 4*L.
As to the absolute best, that's a matter of taste. Are you talking about suites, deluxe rooms, or the cheapest room in a particular 4*L hotel?
For example, if money were no object and I was angling after a deluxe suite, I might go for the Plaza Athenee. Its top suites are mighty...sweet. But their reputation for how they handle non-regular guests staying in their cheapest rooms (cheapest being a relative term, of course) is not warm. In fact, they can be downright frosty to those guests. If I had to pick a "regular" room, then I would probably go for the Georges V.
However, all things said and done, I'm a "big fish in a small pond" type of gal. If room prices were roughly equal, I'd rather have the best room in a 4* hotel than a regular room in a 4*L.

I chimed in for the Hyatt Vendome, I've stayed there 3 times and they catered and pleased us in a big way. I don't know how they did it but they always knew us by our name, I suspect they have a camera at the check in desk for all the shift to know us by name. Get the rooms at the top level with the balcony overlooking Rue de la Paix & Place du Vendome. The hotel has modern elegance rather than the old world ambiance, but the best part is their well trained staff.
