Palermo to Venice Need travel Advice
Myself and another woman (both over 60) are flying into Palermo the last of May 2011. We are leaving our bags in Palermo and tourning Italy for 10-15 days, then return to Palermo for business. We purchased a EuroRail 10 day pass.
We would like to see as much of Italy as possible and thought about taking a train from Palermo to the furthers point - Venice for our first stop. Then layover in many of the cities on our way back to Palermo; Florence, Pisa, Rome, Naples.
We felt Jetlag would be an issue, so we are staying our first night in Palermo, then use the train to unwind from our long flight from the US. and let our bodies adjust to Italian time.
Hopeing for a cabin so we can sleep. I checked the rail and it says to make cabin reservations well in advance, but when you don't know which train to take.. it's impossible.
So my first question is: How would you recommend travel to Venice from Palermo - other than flying.
Next, how do I reserve (from the US) a cabin and know which train we must take to Venice?
We have many other questions, but right now.. those two are major concerns
thank you

Boy that will be a verrrry long train trip.
There is a ferry from Palermo to Naples (I'm pretty sure you can get a cabin or rest up in the deck chairs) and then you could go by train with your stops in Rome, Florence (day trip to Pisa) and Venice.
The ferry takes, like 10 hours or more -- but probably more than that to get to Naples from Palermo by train. I don't think they even have high-speed trains south of Naples.
The Eurorail site has timetables and maps. Also consider using the Italian national train system, Trenitalia.
Do consider flying back to Palermo from Venice, or fly directly there in the first place, to avoid taking this long trip twice. You can get inexpensive one-way domestic flights.

One-way air fares from Palermo to Venice can actually be extremely reasonable. But you should not delay: many of the fares require advance purchase of a certain number of days.
Alitalia has one non-stop from Palermo to Venice (in the evening), and several connections.
