We stayed at the 3* Hotel Elite, very close to the Teatro Massimo. Clean and centrally located. It's however not a free-standing hotel, but one of six 2* and 3* hotels in the same building complex which includes an embassy or two as well. The Elite has good reviews on Tripadvisor, and occupies two floors of part of that building.
There are few free-standing hotels in central Palermo. The major hotels are all outside.

I recommend Hotel Joli (www.hoteljoli.com/en/index.htm). It was great, very central. Would definitly stay there again.

We were in Palermo a few years ago, via a cruise. We spent the day touring the city and popped into the Grand Hotel Et Des Palmes for something to eat and rest our tired feet. This hotel was beautiful! It's centrally located and had a very kind staff.

In October 2004 we stayed at Hotel Boston, it is in the same building as Hotel Elite. I don't know if there is any relationship between the 2 hotels.
The accommodations were perfectly fine and if I recall correctly, it was not very expensive - maybe 80 euro? However, there is an odd feeling about it - walking into this regular office type building and then having your hotel being on one of the floors.

Consider the apartment Palazza Natoli (available through i-escapes.com or directly from the owner at www.elaziz.it). It's a nice one-bedroom apartment on Corso Emmanuel Vittorio, in the heart of Palermo just a few blocks from Quattro Canti. It's one of several apts. in a lovely, modernized palazzo, and the owner lives on the floor below. We were very happy with out 3 nights there. Best pillows ever!

I would second the recommendation for the Hotel Joli (not to be confused with the Jolly Hotel chain). It is very centrally located, clean, and very reasonable. I was just there on Thursday and Friday night actually! Very close to shopping, restaurants, and walking distance to all good sights.
