If you're including Monreale as a Palermo sight, rather than seeing it separately, that will take a half-day (don't miss Monreale), so I'd probably do a combination. I stayed at Sky Sleeping B&B, which was a ten minute walk from the center on a street that was a little neighborhood in its own right.

Hi, meggies -
I agree with Zerlina that Palermo isn't really a place for strolling through neighborhoods. But it has some wonderful things to see - I second the suggestions above, and think you'll find others if you consult guidebooks. I really enjoyed Palermo - hope you do to!

oh I don't know...we loved strolling around Palermo...I found it entirely fascinating! SO different from everywhere else I have been in Italy (this was my first trip to Sicily) No, it is not Venice at all...but it has quite a character all to itself for sure! We were able to combine the "seeing-the sights" with the strolling without a problem really. I hope you enjoy it - we were pleasantly surprised and delighted by the city!
